HOT WEATHER AND EVEN HOTTER SPORT AT BOLDINGS

David James (Mosella Storeys) kicked off the week at Boldings Pools with the top weight of the week, heading a trio of ‘tons’ on Wednesday with 138-11-0 form peg 3 on the Middle Pool. Dave had all carp, from 1lb to 7lbs on corn and pellet, fished close in.

The Middle is only a small pool (11 pegs) but it came up with another big ton for runner up Andy Williams (Telford). He was on peg 1 where the average size of the carp was slightly less than those of the winner, with fish to 6lbs on corn and maggot adding up to 121-8-0.

The Deepdale is another small pool which can give some big catches, a point proved by Pete Plant (Maver Tipton) who put caster to use at peg 11 to net 110-15-0 for third overall, and Martin Travis (Dorset Pools) scaled 92-0-0 at Deepdale peg 14 to finish 4th.

On Thursday fishery boss Ed Turner (OB Wolves) left the rest trailing by 45lbs when he lured 114-11-0 of carp to 15lbs into his swim at peg 25 on the Sycamore Pool. Ed offered corn and pellet, alternated between the 3metre and 8 metre line.

Up on the bank backing onto the Willows Pool, Richard Lawson (Rod & Gun) fed maggot and corn at 5 metres peg 48, to attract carp to 8lbs for a second best of 69-11-0.

Round at corner peg 18 Harry Colley (OB Wolves) was keeping an eye on Alf Taylor (OB Wolves) who was out on point duty at peg 13, and matching Harry fish for fish in the race for third place. At the finish Colley was one fish ahead and ended the day on 58-5-0 to Alf’s 55-13-0.

Opposite sides of the Willows Pool provided first and second on a hot and humid Saturday, when Nige Clarke (RAF Trabuco) just edged ahead of John Francis (Rod & Gun). Nige drew peg 18 and fished caster up in the water for a load of ghost carp in the 1lb to 2lbs bracket, which gave him a return of 96-1-0. Over at peg 5, ‘Franner’ fished pellet at 3 metres to find carp to 5lbs and around 30 tench in the 1lb to 2lb range, and fell short by just over a pound and a half when he scaled 94-7-0.

Dave Brown (Maver Tipton)topped the list on the Sycamore, scaling 83-2-0 at peg 29, and Paul Cartwright (OB Wolves) maintained the list of familiar frame faces with 75-8-0 for 4th at Sycamore 18.

The weather wasn’t quite so hot on Sunday, but the sport was sizzling, with the top five all topping 100lbs, and three different pools hitting top form.

It was a good day for the Newton family, as Duncan took first and john second. The WB Clarke grouped pair were on different pools, but both employed a caster and maggot combination. Duncan’s victory followed on from his win last Sunday and came from peg 48 on the Sycamore, where carp to 9lbs and tench to 3lbs responded to his close in approach to give a return of 127-1-0.

John had all carp at peg 22 on the Larch, taking fish close in and up in the water a little further out. He finished with 113-2-0, which put him 10lbs ahead of an Ash Pool best of 103-1-0 from Ralph Johnson (Bilston Angling) and the same figures from Steve Gibbins (Telford Ang Cent) at Sycamore 13. Tight in behind the two tied weights was Steve Smith (WB Clarke) who completed the best frame of the year so far with 101-8-0 at peg 20 on the Ash.
