Boldings report

SPORTS DESK  30/5/07

A busy week at Boldings saw five matches all produce big weights, with a top catch for the week of 163-9-0. caster is starting to make an impact at the complex, and it was caster and maggot, fished shallow at 12 metres, and close in, which helped Dave Brown (Maver Tipton) to the big weight. He was on peg 25 on the Sycamore, and netted all carp, with samples to 10 lbs contributing towards the final total.

Fellow Tipton rod Pete Plant is well known for his mastery of caster fishing, and he employed his favourite method at peg 5 on the Willows Pool to record an exact ton (100-0-0) to take second.

Point peg 13 on the Sycamore put Mick Thompson (Wolves) close to the 100lb mark with 97-15-0 for third, with Harry Colley not far behind on 94-14-0 at peg 18 on the same pool.

A rain soaked Sunday open still saw a ton up winner when Richard Lawson (Rod & Gun) won the battle of the point pegs. He was on peg 13 on the Sycamore and Mark Taylor (Maver Tipton) was on the other point, peg 8. Both fed with corn and pellet, with Richard also adding caster to the recipe. That made a difference to the catch rate and he pulled 35lbs clear to finish with all carp to 9lbs for 129-14-0. Mark included bream to 3lbs with carp to 9lbs in his 94-12-0.

Pete Plant framed again, dropping down to third with 82-7-0 from corner peg 30 on the Sycamore, and less than a pound behind him, with a Chestnut best of 81-12-0 was Simon Jukes OB Wolves).

The week started with a win on the Sycamore for Tony Foster (OB Wolves) who put together a mix of carp to 10lbs and bream to 3lbs, using corn and maggot close in at peg 26. When the scales arrived, Tony’s catch came to a level 105-0-0 to give him the win. Up at the other end of the pool Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes) worked corn into the corner at peg 50 to tempt 81-0-0 of carp to 9lbs.

It was close between third and fourth, with Alan Weston (OB Wolves) scaling 59-5-0 at peg 21, and Pete Moss (Rod & Gun) having 58-14-0 at peg 6.

The next day the Beech, Oak and Chestnut pools were used and the Beech came up trumps for Jason Elwell (MB Angling). Drawn opposite the point, on peg 23 he combined caster and maggot, fished close in for 99-4-0, a catch which featured carp to 8lbs.

Some way behind the winner was Howard Williams (Wrexham) with an Oak Pool best of 64-0-0, taken on corn, down the edge at peg 24. Right behind Howard, in fact only 1 ounce behind, with a Chestnut best of 63-15-0 was Paul Evans (Storeys) and a couple of pounds behind him was John Wild (Team Cudmore) on 62-6-0.

Kevin Melville (Phoenix) took top honours on the Bank Holiday match, keeping his run of form going with a 100-4-0 winner from peg 15 on the Chestnut. Carp to 9lbs and bream to 3lbs showed a liking for his corn, offered at 5 metres, and into the side.

Caster and maggot fished in the margins got Paul Evans into the frame again, when carp to 8lbs and tench to 4lbs added up to 92-0-0 at corner peg 4 on the Sycamore.

77-6-0 from peg 21 on the Chestnut gave Dave Matson (Maver Wolves) third and 64-13-0 from Chestnut 10 saw Paul Cartwright (OB Wolves) pick up 4th.
