BAG UP TIME AGAIN AT BOLDINGS

With Monday being a Bank Holiday there were five opens at Boldings this week, and all were won with more than 100lbs of fish, with the lowest winning weight being 100-11-0 and the highest 170-15-0.

None of last weeks winners made it to the top this time, but three anglers finished in the same place and on the corresponding day as last week.

First up to the winners rostrum was Colin Reynolds (Bilston Angling) after a peg to peg battle with Paul Cartwright (OB Wolves) on the Bank Holiday open. Colin was on peg 5 on the Ash Pool, where he offered maggot close in throughout the match, to take carp to 7lbs for a124-0-0 total. Paul was on peg 7, and caught on maggot and corn close in, alternated with shallow fished maggot further out when the bites slowed, but fell behind by 22lbs by the time the whistle went, ending with 102-0-0.

If you cant win the match, win your pool is a good maxim, and that’s what Kevin Melville (Phoenix) did, falling just short of the ton with a Willows best of 99-2-0 at peg 15. Fourth went to Richard Duke (WB Clarke) at corner peg 9 on the Ash, where he scaled 97-6-0.

Tuesday saw the Sycamore Pool in action and point peg 8 provided Phil Foster (OB Wolves) with a 100-11-0 winner, with corn and pellet close in to either side of the point bringing carp to 10lbs to the net.

Martin Davenport (Phoenix) scored the first of two frame places with 90-12-0 at peg 24. martin fished maggot and corn at 5 metres and close in for fish to 8lbs. Dave barnyard (Maver Wolves) also put in the first of two frame appearances with a third best 74-8-0 from the other point, peg 13, and Matt Stobbs (Rod & Gun) was the first of the trio to finish in the same place as last week, when he took 4th again with 70-12-0 at peg 48, having taken 4th from peg 47 last week.

The top two both exceeded 100lbs on Thursday, with Chestnut peg 30 coming up with the goods for the second week running. Rob Baker (Fishermans Friend) drew it this time, and improved on last weeks winning total by 28lbs, scaling 130-4-0. Carp to 10lbs on shallow fished maggot from the 12 metre line made up the haul, which left runner up Carl Haywood (Sedgeley) exactly 20lbs short. He was on peg 21, where meat and pellet attracted carp to 8lbs and bream to 3lbs on the close in line, giving a return of 110-4-0.

Round at peg 38 Harry Colley (OB Wolves) was close to the ton with 98-11-0 for third, with Graham Roberts (OB Wolves) not far behind on 95-6-0 at peg 16.

The highest weight of the week came on Saturday when Simon Jukes (OB Wolves) cruised to victory at peg 18 on the Chestnut. A pellet and maggot combination got the fish going almost from the off, with the hookbait fished shallow at 12 metres accounting for carp to 12lbs, which helped Simon to build an impressive 170-15-0 by the final whistle.

Martin Davenport (Phoenix) was second last Saturday, and repeated the feat this time with a Sycamore best of 87-12-0 at peg 4. Corn, pellet and maggot all did their bit to attract carp to 8lbs.

79-15-0 at peg 39 on the Sycamore saw Clayton Bagley (Maver Tipton) take third ahead of Dave Barnard (Maver Wolves) on 75-7-0 at Sycamore 30. Best on the Beech was Terry Slater (OB Wolves) on 71-9-0 for 5th overall.

Higher water temperatures on Sunday, following the hot sun on Saturday saw the complex move into top gear and the 51 anglers fishing the match averaged 50lbs apiece with a total weight caught of 2550lbs.

John Wild (team Cudmore) led the bag up session with 112-7-0 from peg 32 on the Sycamore. The catch was made up with carp to 11lbs, taken on corn, pellet and maggot, from close in. best of the rest was Jack Hailey (WAC Tac) who had a Willows top catch of 89-10-0 at peg 7. Colin Reynolds framed again , taking third with a Chestnut best of 82-7-0 at peg 32, and Neil Russell (Maver Tipton)repeated his 4th place of last week, taking 4th again with 79-1-0 at Chestnut 26.

Top rod on the Chestnut was Brian Clarke (BCUL) who was just short on the ton with 98-13-0 at peg 16.

Wednesday had seen a tight frame headed by last weeks big winner Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) who took advantage of point peg 8 on the Sycamore to take carp to 9lbs and bream to 3lbs, close in on corn and maggot for 88-11-0.

Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes) added a second place to his growing list by narrowly beating Harry Colley (OB Wolves). Fourth man Ted Ecclestone (Maver Wolves) was opposite Harry, at peg 4, and weighed 68-9-0.

Good Friday was especially good for Adam Slade (Daiwa Dorking) as he won by 36lbs. Pegged just off the point on peg 30 on the Chestnut, Adam went out to 12 metres with shallow fished caster to build a 102-0-0 net, with carp up to 7 lbs.

Dave Brown (Maver Tipton) was a close third with 65-6-0 from peg 21 on the Chestnut, and Paul Evans (Storeys) was fourth on 62-2-0 from Oak 22.

On Saturday Paul Cartwright converted his mid-week third to a first, and beat the 100lb mark again, this time from peg 33 on the long bank of the Sycamore. Shallow fished caster and maggot brought in carp to 11lbs from the 12 metre line for a 120-2-0 total.

On the opposite bank from the winner Martin Davenport (Phoenix) used similar tactic for 95-6-0 to finish second at peg 23, with Mick Williams (Rod & Gun) not far behind him on 91-12-0 form the corner at peg 4. Dave Brown framed again, finishing 4th with a Chestnut best of 90-12-0. Harry Colley was also in the money again thanks to 80-12-0 from Sycamore 8.

Caster was king on Sunday when Simon Richardson (Maver Tipton) won with another ton weight ahead of a tie for second. Simon was on peg 30 on the Sycamore and tempted 109-15-0 of carp to 9lbs on caster, up in the water at 13 metres. Fellow Tipton rod Dave Brown framed for the third time, sharing second with Tony Faulkener (OB Wolves). They also fished up in the water with caster for their 90-9-0 each, Dave at Willows peg 17 and Tony at Sycamore 33. KITSON’S BOLDINGS BONANZA.

Over on the Chestnut, Ed Turner (OB Wolves) used the same bait combination at peg 6, to tempt carp to 10lbs and tench to 3lbs, but couldn’t match the winners catch rate and finished on 81-2-0.

Peg 30 on the Sycamore and peg 30 on the Chestnut gave the next two place weights, with John Wild (Team Cudmore) nipping into third with 73-2-0 and Howard Williams (Wrexham) was just behind him on 71-2-0.
