Boldings report

SPORTS DESK 15/1/08

With two firsts and a second to his credit, Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) was top rod at Boldings Pools this week, winning both mid week opens and taking second on Sunday.

Mick started on a wind and rain lashed Wednesday match with a narrow win in a peg to peg battle with Eric Bancroft (Rod & Gun). They were on the Middle Pool, where Mick drew peg 3 and Eric peg 1. Mick selected a pellet approach, fishing into open water at 8 metres, and taking carp to 3lbs up in the water to finish on 27-6-0.

Eric opted for maggot and fished into the side at the corner peg for carp in the 1lb to 3lb class, finishing just over a pound short on 26-3-0. Third went to Dave Barnard (Rod & Gun) with a Hawthorn best of 15-15-0.

The weather didn’t relent for Thursdays match and competitors faced another soaking and buffeting, but Jameson gave himself a little more breathing space. Sticking to pellet as bait, he went out to 12 metres at peg 2 on the Stock pool to pick out carp to 4lbs, which added up to 32-5-0. Directly opposite Mick, on peg 11, Colin Reynolds also fished at 12 metres with pellet, and had some slightly bigger fish, up to 5lbs, but not enough of them, and he was left on 28-8-0 when the whistle went.

Dave Barnard was third again, netting a level 15-0-0 at peg 7 on the Stock.

Top weight of the week fell to Matt Stobbs (Rod & Gun) when he converted Middle peg 1 into a winner on Saturday. Fishing pellet close to the paddles, and enjoying some rare sunshine, Matt collected carp from 1lb to 5lbs on his way to 42-6-0. That put him some way ahead of John Wild (Stafford) who was in the corner at peg 7 on the Hawthorn. He fished in the side and to the island with pellet for 27-5-0 of carp to 4lbs. In the opposite corner, at peg 8, Brian Atwell (Wolves) scaled 23-9-0 to claim 3rd, and Eric Bancroft framed again with 20-13-0 for 4th at Middle peg 6.

Sunday was a complete contrast to Saturday, with heavy skies giving a dark gloomy feel to the day, with night closing in by the end of the match.

Dave Brown (Fox Match) added a Sunday win to his Saturday success of last week with a clear cut victory form Hawthorn peg 13. Going out to 10 metres with pellet and maggot, Dave attracted carp to 5lbs to put together 41-14-0.

Mick Jameson fished to the island at peg 5 on the same pool with pellet to add his runner up placing to his mid week victories, scaling 30-2-0 this time. John Newton (WB Clarke) was a close third from the peg next to Jameson, he scaled 29-5-0, leaving Dave White (Maver) to collect 4th with a Beech Pool top score of 23-3-0.

Boldings report

PORTS DESK 09/01/08

Hi Ed. I don’t know why, but this doesn’t seem to have got through last week, so I am sending it again.

Malc.

Andy Williams (Telford)celebrated New Year and started 2008 in winning style at Boldings Pools, taking the honours on the New Years day open with the top catch of the week. Drawn on peg 4 on the Ash Pool, Andy opted for a maggot and corn combination, and fished close in to take carp in the 1lb to 5lb class, finishing with 71-3-0.

Further along the same bank of the Ash, at peg 9,Phil Rhodes (Mid Leisure) fished down the side with pellet for carp from 1lb to 3lbs to take second, but was well behind the winner on 43-14-0. Pushing him hard was fellow Mid Leisure rod Mick Jameson, who had a Middle best of 41-15-0, and close behind him came Nige Clarke (RAF Trabuco) with a Hawthorn best of 40-8-0.

The following day Trevor Burton (Lichfield) topped an Ash Pool frame with 41-12-0 in a biting east wind. Carp to 5lbs made up Trevors catch, which fell to pellet, fished close at peg corner 1. Diagonally opposite the winner at peg 12, Dave Barnard (Rod & Gun) alternated between the 10 metre line and close in with pellet for a second best 26-6-0, which put him 7lbs clear of Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes) on 19-6-0 at peg 16. That left Frank Mountford (Wolverhampton) to complete the frame with 18-14-0 at peg 20.

Dave Brown scored his first win under his new Fox banner on Saturday, leading the way from peg 11 on the Hawthorn with a maggot based 32-9-0. Opposite Dave, at peg 5, John Francis (Rod & Gun) put together a level 24-0-0 for second, pipping Harry Colley (OB Wolves) at the next peg. Harry scaled 22-10-0 and had Pete Plant, also now under the Fox banner, hard on his heels on 22-5-0 which was the top score on the Ash Pool.

The paddles were hard at work on Sunday keeping the ice at bay, and the top four catches all came from different pools. Match leader was Mark Stevens (Wolverhampton) who made the most of the shelter offered by corner peg 8 on the Hawthorn to put together a 47-3-0 net, fishing maggot close in and at 8metres.

Dave Barnard scored another second, and had an Oak pool best of 43-13-0 fishing pellet at 10 metres at peg 30. Over on the Chestnut Matt Stobbs (Rod & Gun) was easily the best with 35-6-0 for third overall, and Dave White (Fox) headed the Beech card with 24-13-0 for 4th.
