Boldings report

BOLDINGS REPORT 22-12-09

Hard frosts in the second half of last week caused the cancellation of a number of matches, but river levels came down towards normal, and at long last the quarry opens got going again.

No one was under any illusion that there would be any big weights at Shrewsbury, where arctic conditions prevailed, but everyone was glad to be back on the river, and small dace provided some enjoyable sport. Robin Astley (Wem) was the one to enjoy the day most. He drew peg 60, by the statue, and had a lot of small fish on stick float and maggot, to put a pound between himself and the rest, claiming top honours with 3-14-0.

Tony Bouckley (Total Angling) was four pegs upstream of Robin, at peg 56, and worked with both stick float and Bolo’ methods for a mix of roach and dace, to weigh 2-14-0. In between the top two, Ian Ward (Weston Tackle) winkled out 1-6-0 using close in stick float tactics.

There are opens on the Town Waters on Boxing Day this week, and on Monday and Thursday next week. Draw for each is at Total Angling, 8.30 am.

Gary Morris (OB Wolves) collected his second Monday win on the trot at Boldings this week when he just got the better of a close finish with Eric Bancroft (Rod & Gun). They were on opposite sides of the island on the Hawthorn Pool, with gary on peg 5 and Eric peg 9.

Gary fished corn and pellet at 8 metres to tempt carp to 4lbs, to end the day on 41-3-0. Eric had better fish, with samples to 5lbs, on maggot fished to the island, but had less of them to finish on 40-1-0. Phil Shaw (Lower Hill) finished third for the second Monday running, scaling 27-5-0 at Hawthorn peg 3, and in the corner at peg 1 dave Matson (R&G) had 20-5-0 in 4th.

Pete Ricketts (New Willenhall) had the top weight of the week to win on Wednesday. Maggot at 8 metres got the fish going to give Pete a clear win with 54-9-0.

Alan Jones (Deggys) fished pellet in the corner at Deepdale 14 to net 32-12-0 for second, with Dave Barnard (R&G) close behind on 30-12-0 at Middle peg 8. back on the Deepdale, Tony Foster wrapped up the frame with 25-14-0 at peg 3.

Temperatures were dropping by Thursday, but Neil Turner (Fosters) managed over 50lbs to win and Richard Lawson ( Maver) was only just below the 50lb mark in second.

Neil added a win on this match to the one he enjoyed on Saturday last week, by fishing maggot at 12 metres at Oak peg 3. Carp to 3lbs and roach to 1lb obliged for a return of 51-4-0.

Richard was on peg Hawthorn peg 3 and attracted carp to 5lbs with maggot, fished to each side of the peg. To scale 49-4-0. Morgans rods took the remaining places, with Ken Humphries third on 30-10 at Hawthorn 5 and Kev Sudlow scaling 25-0-0 at Hawthorn 1.

Weights held pretty well as the temperatures plummeted into the week-end, and Steve Owen (Mid Leisure) won on Saturday with 36-15-0. Stock peg 11 came up with the goods for Steve, with carp to 3lbs picking up his pellet baited hook, fished at 5metres.

Pete Plant (Maver) fished caster and maggot at 5 metres and close in at Stock peg 3 to net 31-3-0 of carp to 3lbs. Andy Bayliss-Kyte (Maver Sonubaits) was a close third on 30-4-0 at Stock peg 10 and Tony Foster (OBW) had a Deepdale best of 25-5-0 in 4th.

In bitter conditions on Sunday Adrian Childs (Broseley AC) pulled clear of the crowd when carp to 4lbs added up to 41-1-0 at Middle peg 5. Adrian caught on maggot, fished into the corner and at 5 metres.

Stock peg 11 featured again, giving Chris Holmes (Bridgnorth AS) second spot. Chris also fished maggot, offering the bait at 12 metres and in the side for 28-8-0. At the next peg Matt Stobbs (R&G) had 20-4-0 for third and an Ash best of 19-5-0 gave Matt Price (OBW) 4th.
