Boldings report

Boldings Report 3/11/09

          SPORTS DESK 3/11/09.

The fourth round of the Shropshire Winter League was fished at a gale lashed Boldings Pools on Sunday, and Total Angling became the fourth team to record a win in this years series.

With some horrendous conditions, where heavy rain was followed by the gales, Total Angling equaled the best score of the series so far to win with 21 points.

Maver were only two behind with 23 in second, Oakengates Angling Centre finished third on 27, winners of the previous round, Rod & Gun had a bad day to finish on 36 and Hodnet were 5th with 43.

Given the weather conditions, I doubt if anyone would have predicted the winning weight, or the overall average weight for the match, and the winner, Simon Richardson Total Angling) would not have expected to tip a huge 153-4-0 onto the scales at peg 23 on the Beech Pool.

Making the most of a sheltered area of the pool, ‘Ricco’ fished maggot on long pole and close in to find some really big carp. Part of his catch was four fish for 60llbs, including one of 24-4-0.

There were three more Total angling rods in the top six, with Dave Brown picking up second, Rob Brennan third and Andy Williams who was second on the previous round, finished 5th this time.

Dave Brown fell just short of a ton with 99-14-0, caught on shallow caster at peg 3 on the Middle Pool, Rob Brennan also caught on shallow caster to net 94-10-0 at hawthorn peg 3.

Sean Barber(Maver) slipped into 4th with a Deepdale best of 85-4-0 at peg 4. Andy Williams was also on the Deepdale, recording 79-7-0 for 5th at peg 6 and Matt McDermott (Maver) completed an impressive top six with 71-12-0 from Hawthorn peg 1.

Maver are still favourites to win the league, they stay top of the table and increase their points advantage from two to three. They now have 7 match points, Total Angling move up to second in the table with 10 points, Rod & Gun drop a place, falling from two behind the leaders to four behind on 11 points. Oakengates are 4th on 14 and Hodnet 5 on 16.

Total weight caught in the match was over 1884lbs for an average of over 37.5lbs per angler. Round five is at Hampton Springs on Sunday November 15th, draw at the fishery café at 9.00am.
