Boldings report

SPORTS DESK 18/3/08

The bigger carp are beginning to show more consistently at Boldings Pools, and even though it was cold and wet on Saturday, the top four catches in the open gave an average weight of over 70lbs per man. The Chestnut pool proved to be slightly better than the Sycamore, filling the top two places, and providing match winner John Newton (WB Clarke) with the best catch of the week.

John drew peg 14 on the Chestnut, and netted carp to 7lbs by offering maggot in the margins. When the scales arrived, he had 74-3-0 in the keepnet, which was just enough to put him ahead of Matt Stobbs (Rod & Gun). Matt was on the other side of the Chestnut, at peg 38, and he too caught close in on maggot, but with slightly smaller fish, going to 6lbs, he finished on 70-14-0.

Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) was exactly a pound behind second, with a Sycamore Pool best of 69-14-0 at corner peg 50. Fourth went to Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) on 65-8-0 at point peg 13 on the Sycamore.

Sycamore peg 8 turned out to be a winner on Sunday when Dave Brown (Wolves) defied a strong northerly wind to offer maggot at 10metres, which he alternated with a close in line, to build a 70-7-0 winner, helped by carp to 8lbs.

John Francis (Rod & Gun) , who finished 5th on Saturday, added a runner up spot with a Larch best of 67-13-0. he alternated pellet at 8 metres with maggot close in for carp to 7lbs at peg 8. Over in the corner at the back of the island on the Larch, Pete Plant (Maver Midlands) scaled 57-6-0 to finish third, just in front of last weeks double winner Colin Reynolds (Bilston Ang Cent). He had 55-5-0 at peg 49 on the Sycamore, for 4th, and Matt Stobbs framed again with a Chestnut best of 53-13-0.

In the week they had some pretty horrible conditions to contend with, battling near gale force winds. The Ash Pool was less badly affected than the Sycamore, and gave the top three catches, led by Donnington rod Colin Wozak. He was on peg 14 and fished to the middle with maggot feeder, and close in with pole and maggot to tempt 64-11-0 of carp to 4lbs. Down at peg 20 Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes) stuck to the close in approach with maggot for his second best 56-15-0, and in between the top two Nige Clarke netted 40-8-0 for third. Fourth went to a Sycamore best of 35-15-0 by Pete Moss (Telford\).

On Thursday Karl Haywood (Sedgeley Lions) won in a close encounter with Ed Turner (OB Wolves) when they drew almost opposite each other on the Sycamore.

Karl had the advantage of bigger fish at peg 33, where carp to 7lbs responded to his pellet at 10 metres, giving him figures of 40-5-0. Ed opted for maggot on tip tactics at peg 25, and fell just short on 39-15-0, needing one of his fish to 6lbs to have been just that bit bigger.

Paul Evans (Storeys) had a Chestnut best of 37-14-0 for third and John Wild (Stafford) completed the frame with 27-15-0 at Sycamore 49.
