Boldings report

Boldings Report 28/5/08

What a Bank Holiday week-end that was. With low temperatures, gale force winds and lashing rain it felt a lot more like early March than late May. Last year gave us an awful summer, but at least we had a couple of decent weeks early in the spring. So far this year we have been lucky to see a couple of days.

The miserable weather didn’t put a damper on Andy Williams (Vespe) at Boldings Pools on Wednesday, as he hammered out the fish at 49 on the Sycamore Pool on his way to a new fishery match record of 224-10-0. That beat the previous record of 224-3-0, which was also set by Andy, in 2006.

The epic catch fell to corn, fished to each side of the peg, and was made up with carp to 9lbs and bream to 4lbs.

Howard Williams (Weston Pools) must have felt shell shocked that his very respectable 84-1-0 left him trailing the winner by some 140lbs. Howard was on peg 22 on the Sycamore, and caught carp to 7lbs, on caster, up in the water. Also on the Sycamore was third placed Bill Shaw (Wolverhampton) who scaled 67-8-0 at peg 8.

Fourth went to a Willows Pool best of 53-15-0 by Brian Clarke (Maver Midlands).

On Thursday Howard Williams shook off the shock of the Wednesday result with another 80lb bag, which was good enough for top spot this time. Sticking to his shallow caster approach, this time at peg 16 on the Chestnut, Howard found carp to 8lbs and bream to 3lbs on his way to victory.

Carl Foster (OB Wolves) nipped into second ahead of his brother Mark. They were both on the Sycamore, with Carl weighing 74-4-0 at peg 34 and Mark 64-15-0 at peg 13.

Fourth went to Denis Whitehouse (West End) on 61-4-0 at Sycamore 8, and best on the Chestnut was Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) on 59-8-0.

Steve Roberts (R & G) put the Sycamore back on top on Saturday, and once again it was the Willows bank which came up with the winner. Steve was on peg 46 and offered corn and maggot at 5 metres and in the margins, to tempt carp to 8lbs and bream to 4lbs, ending the day on 81-6-0.

Runner up Harry Colley (OB Wolves) used meat and pellet in the edge at peg 15 on the Larch to find carp to 9lbs and a total of 63-6-0 to pip Alf \Taylor to second. Alf was on Sycamore 13 and scaled 62-10-0, while over to his left another OB Wolves rod, Jamie Langford, completed the top four with 54-13-0 at peg 21.

Sunday saw Harry Colley move up to top spot when carp to 7lbs and bream to 4lbs accepted his meat offerings at ‘point’ peg 13 on the Sycamore, and added up to 54-1-0.

Peg 21 featured again, providing Graham Roberts (OB Wolves) with 49-6-0 and second place, a couple of pounds ahead of Dave Brown (Wolverhampton) with a Chestnut best of 47-4-0 from peg 37.  Fourth also came from the Chestnut when David Emlyn (Oakengates Ang Cent) scaled 42-4-0 at peg 15.

The other point peg on the Sycamore, number 8, gave Paul Cartwright (OB Wolves) the final winners purse of the week at Boldings on Bank Holiday Monday. Carp to 8lbs responded to corn, fished each side of the point, to give a return of 62-15-0. In the awful conditions that was easily enough to beat a Chestnut best of 50-12-0 from Paul Evans (Storeys) who had carp and bream on caster at peg 13.

Brian Clarke and Dave Brown both framed again, sharing third with 44-8-0 each. Brian was on Chestnut 35 and Dave drew Sycamore 2.
