BOLDINGS REPORT 2-12-09

Maver Midlands cruised to victory with the best score of the series to clinch the Shropshire Winter League title at the final round, staged at Boldings Pools, but it was the race to claim second place, and the corresponding qualification for the semi finals of the Angling Times Team Championships, which held the main interest on the day.

Total Angling were best placed to claim the semi final place, but had Rod & Gun breathing down their neck, only one point behind in the points table going into the match.

Maver had six section wins, three second in section and one fourth in section to finish with just 16 penalty points for first on the day. Oakengates Angling Centre got ahead of both Total Angling and Rod & Gun to take second on the day with 27 points, and crucially, Total Angling finished in third with 27, while Rod & Gun had to settle for 4th on 30, with Hodnet 5th on 49.

Maver also claimed top individual place through Telford based Sean Barber, who set the pace from peg 11 on the Hawthorn Pool. Sean fished Sonubaits 4m/m pellet to the island to put 40lbs of carp to 3lbs in his net, then topped them up with another 32lbs from open water, using the same bait, to end the day on 72-11-0.

Another Maver team man, Pete Plant, filled second spot, with a caster based 50-8-0 from Middle peg 1. Pete took four carp to around 4lbs early on, fishing the deck, before shallowing up to around half depth to take the rest of his catch.

Matt Stobbs (Oakengates Ang Cent) was a close third with his Oak Pool top score of 49-3-0, fellow Oakengates rod Shane Rogers was best on the Stock pool with his 4th placed 47-9-0.

Eric Bancroft was the best placed Rod & Gun team member, finishing in 5th with 45-13-0 at Middle peg 10, and Steve Giles was the third Oakengates member in the top six when completed the frame with 43-13-0 from Middle peg 6.

(The match gave an average weight of 24.5lb per angler, and the lowest section winning weight was 32lbs. Average section winning weight was 43-4-0.)

          Final league standings, 1st Maver, 9 match points. 2nd Total Angling 15. 3rd Rod & Gun 17. 4th Oakengates 20. 5th Hodnet 26.

Eric Bancroft took advantage of a little bit of shelter at peg 5 on the Oak Pool at a wind lashed Monday open at Boldings. Fishing pellet down the side of the dam, he picked off carp to 4lbs, and finished clear of the field with 49-11-0.

Andy Williams (Vespe) also offered pellet in the side at peg 13, but a smaller stamp of fish left him on 31-2-0 at the whistle. Opposite Andy, Alan Jones (Deggys) was left needing one more fish when the whistle blew, as he saw the scales settle at 29-13-0.

Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes) could also have done with another fish, when he had to settle for 4th with 28-5-0 at peg 30.

On Wednesday Bob Tromans moved up to top spot after drawing peg 8 on the Middle Pool. Pellet and maggot brought the fish in close at corner peg 8, with carp to 5lbs adding up to 36-1-0.

Graham Evason (OB Wolves) was diagonally opposite the winner at peg 1, where he found carp to 4lbs at 7 metres with pellet to scale 33-3-0 for second. Third placed Phil Shaw (Lower Hill) was next to the winner at peg 9 and had 28-9-0 for third, and a Stock Pool best of 23-14-0 gave Keith Powell (OBW) 4th.

Andy Williams (Vespe) added a win to his second placing on Monday when he claimed the spoils on the Thursday open.

The Hawthorn Pool provided the top three on this one and it was peg 1 which proved to be the winner for Andy. He fished maggot down the edge to each side to find carp to 6lbs, which gave a total of 38-9-0.

Up at the other end of the pool Dave Barnard (R&G) worked pellet at 5 metres at peg 7 to take 31-5-0 of carp in the 3lb bracket to pinch second by an ounce from Ed Turner (OBW). Ed had his 31-4-0 from peg 5, while 4th placed Karl Haywood (Sedgeley) had a Beech best of 21-5-0.

Saturday gave a close finish when three different pools gave the top three weights, with Andy Bayliss-Kyte (Maver Sonubaits) leading the way from Ash peg 20. Pellet fished at 12 metres saw a level 39-0-0 drop into the net, made up with carp to 4lbs.

Keith Powell framed again, taking second this time with a Hawthorn best of 37-13-0, caught on pellet at 8 metres and close in at peg 3. Martin Harrell (Maver) topped the Oak card with 37-3-0 from peg 16, and Tony Foster (OBW) had 36-12-0 form Oak 27 for 4th.

Dave Barnard was in the prize money again on Sunday, picking up the top prize this time thanks to a pellet based 46-8-0 from Chestnut peg 21, Dave Jones (Morgans Oswestry) was just over 3lbs behind on 43-3-0 at peg 4. He also caught on pellet, offered at 5metres and in the side.

Third went to Dave Hailey (OBW) who scaled 37-13-0 at peg 10 and Mark Lloyd (Oakengates Ang Cent) finished things off with 35-0-0 at peg 15.
