Boldings report

SPORTS DESK.  26-6-07

They had a lot of heavy rain on Sunday at Boldings Pools, and a lot of heavy nets of fish to go with it.

Three different pools all produced ton up bags and the day saw the best aggregate frame weight of the year so far, as the top five averaged over 123lbs apiece. Top of the five was Chris Newton (WB Clarke) but his 150-8-0 on maggot and corn from peg 36 on the Sycamore was only just enough to secure a win. Runner up Simon Jukes (OB Wolves) was only a little over a pound behind the winner on 149-5-0 at peg 42  on the same pool, and had one of the 3lb pound tench he included with carp to 9lbs in his net been a carp, he would have been the one to pick up the main prize.

Dave Brown (Maver) took third and collected the top prize on the beech Pool with 113-6-0 at peg 18, and over the Ash Pete Plant (Maver) nipped into 4th ahead of Tony Faulkener (OB Wolves) who was also on the Ash. Plant weighed 105-15-0 and Faulkener 100-6-0.

Earlier in the week David James (Mosella Storeys) opened the proceedings with the top catch of the week to win the Wednesday open on the Sycamore. He was on peg 46 where pellet to each side of the peg attracted carp to 9lbs and tench to 4lbs for a total of 171-11-0.

A similar approach at peg 49 saw Alf Taylor netting carp to 8lbs and bream to 3lbs for 121-8-0 and a comfortable second ahead of Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) on 77-7-0 at point peg 13. Fourth went to 68-3-0 from Mick Jameson (Middy ML) at peg 25.

Next day there were four tons from two pools as Dave Brown (Maver) set the pace from peg 15 on the Chestnut. Carp to 10plbs homed in on his maggot and corn offerings, and Dave slid the net under a total of 158-8-0 for a convincing victory.

David James dropped a place on the previous day to finish second this time. He worked with pellet again to net carp to 9 lbs and bream to 3lbs for 131-3-0 at peg 33 on the Sycamore.

Tony Foster (OB Wolves) added another frame appearance to his pair of last week with a third placed 122-1-0 at Sycamore 47, and Ed Turner (OB Wolves) extended his run of ‘frames’ by scaling 101-4-0 at Chestnut 21.

Richard Buxton (Yale) scored his first win at Boldings on Saturday when he headed a 36 strong line up with 114-14-0. He opted for a red maggot attack at peg 19 on the Chestnut, and found carp to 9lbs and bream to 4lbs to end the day as a winner.

Mel Kitson had his second frame of the week when he led the way on the Sycamore with an even 106lbs, which he took on corn and maggot, close in at peg 50 on the Sycamore. Some 22lbs behind Kitson was Colin Reynolds (Bilston Angling) on 84-2-0 at Chestnut 17, and Dave Brown put in his third frame appearance of the week with 74-4-0 at the next peg.
