Boldings report

Boldings report    2-12-15.

The Monday open at Boldings Pools turned into a three way battle on the Beech Pool for the top honours, with only just over a pound separating first and third, and only three ounces between first and second.

The eventual winner was Keith Powell [PI Boldings] who edged Tony Foster [PI Bold] out of first by scaling 46-8-0 at peg 7. Maggot, presented at 7 metres, accounted for carp to 4lbs, which helped Keith to scrape home.

Tony was almost opposite Keith, at peg 26, and had the winner worried by netting bigger fish, carp to 6lbs. Maggot at 10 metres was the tactic employed by Tony, but it didn’t tempt quite the number of fish required, and at the weigh in he saw the scales stop frustratingly short at 46-5-0.

At peg 9 Colin Reynolds [Bilston Ang Cent] needed only one more fish to have pipped the top two when he weighed 45-7-0. Fourth went to 34-6-0 which was recorded by Paul Hemmings [Monkhall] at peg 18.

Last Sundays winner Phil Rhodes [PI Bold] picked up another win when he finished top of the list on Wednesday this week, from peg 3 on the Middle Pool. Maggot at 6 metres found another catch of carp in the 4lb bracket, and put Phil well clear with a total of 45-8-0.

Steve Owen [Monkhall] was on corner peg 5 on the Middle, and had fish of a similar size to those of the winner, from in the corner and from the 6 metre line, to scale 28-14-0, which ounced out the Hawthorn Pool top score of 28-13-0 by Bob Tromans [Fiery Holes]. Back on the Middle, a level 28-0-0 handed fourth to Stuart Aston [Swan] at peg 1.

Weights climbed on Thursday to give the best average of the week, with the Sycamore yielding 74-12-0 from peg 47 for Graham Roberts [PI Bold]. Maggot proved to be top bait again, bringing carp to 6lbs and barbel to 3lbs to the net from the 10 metre and 6 metre lines.

Dave Brown [Maver] fished close in to the point at Sycamore peg 8, and also went out to 12 metres for 64-11-0 of carp to 5lbs and bream to 2lbs. An even 64-0-0 from Sycamore peg 4 gave third to Andy Williams [Vespe] and the best weight from the Chestnut, 62-12-0, gave fourth to Howard Williams [Tricast Weston].

PI Boldings rods filled the Saturday frame, with Adam Jones leading the way with the best weight on the week, 75-2-0. Maggot continued to dominate, and found carp to 6lbs for Adam, close in and at 8 metres at Beech peg 16.

Tony Foster and Keith Powell both framed again, in reverse order this time, with Tony claiming second from Beech peg 7, where he scaled 58-2-0. Keith was on the Ash Pool and had 45-7-0 from peg 5 for third overall, which left Mick Jameson on 42-8-0 at Ash peg 18 to complete the card.

Although the more sheltered pools were used on Sunday, rain soaked and wind battered was the best description of the hardy and determined bunch of matchmen who defied the awful conditions to enjoy their sport.

No matter how bad the weather, a match will still produce a winner, and on this occasion it was Dave Emlyn (Oakengates Ang Cent] who overcame the conditions best, to come up with a 38-0-0 winning bag. Drawn on peg 14 on the Deepdale Pool, Dave picked off carp from 1lb to 4lbs by fishing close to the paddles with maggot.

Next door, at peg 13, Graham Roberts added a runner up to his mid week win. He had a mix of carp to 4lbs and bream to 2lbs on maggot, fished at 10 metres and 6metres, which gave him a return of 29-10-0. A couple of pegs along the bank, Tony Woolaston [Fatty’s] scraped home in third with 24-15-0, which was hard pressed by the 24-11-0 from Dave Hailey [PI Bold] over at peg 2.
