Boldings report
Weights are settling down to a decent winter level at Boldings Pools as we say goodbye to the bumper catches of summer and the skill of the angler is put more to the test.
On the Monday open it was Dave Pritchard [PI Boldings] who shone through best with a win from corner peg 50 on the Sycamore Pool. He contacted carp and barbel by working maggot at 12 metres, and netted fish of 8lbs and 4lbs respectively as he put together his 76-10-0 match winner.
Shallow maggot tactics helped Mick Jameson [PI Bold] to his runner up 50-14-0, which came from peg 37, and was made up by carp to 5lbs. Bob Tromans [Fiery Holes] finished one fish behind Jameson when he scaled 48-8-0 at peg 45, with Phil Shaw [PI Bold] fourth on 41-10-0 at peg 34.
Wednesday honours went to Mick Keene [ABC] who combined caster and pellet to record a weight which differed by only one ounce from that of the Monday winner. The 76-9-0 which won for Mick consisted of carp to 6lbs, with some of the catch coming to shallow tactics and some from the close in line at peg 8 on the Oak Pool.
Second man Stuart Aston [Swan] was on the Beech Pool and alternated between the 10 metre and five metre lines to pick off carp to 5lbs for a total of 65-11-0. Dave Pritchard added to his Monday win by taking third with a level 50-0-0 from Beech peg 32, and Steve Owen [Monkhall] continued his recent form with a fourth best 46-13-0 from Oak peg 13.
Thursday saw Steve Owen get the better of the rest by winning a neck and neck battle for top spot with Keith Powell [PI Bold]. Both were on the Sycamore Pool, Steve at peg 46 and Keith at peg 4. Maggot and corn was the bait combination chosen by Steve at 46, and carp to 8lbs with barbel to 3lbs came to the bait, some from the 12 metre line and some from close in. At the whistle they added up to 71-9-0, which gave winning margin of exactly one pound.
At peg 4 Keith opted for pellet and corn, but the fish he contacted were of a smaller stamp, with carp to 6lbs and bream to 2lbs, caught at 5 metres and in the corner, gave a tally of 70-9-0.
Double winner from last week Jordan Hall [Middy] collected third thanks to a Chestnut Pool top catch of 62-15-0 from peg 32, while at Sycamore peg 24 Dave Brown [Maver] weighed in a fourth placed 57-10-0.
On Saturday weights dipped when the Larch Pool fished below par and 43-13-0 handed victory to Rob Hancox [Kings]. Caster, worked down the side and at 12 metres found carp to 6lbs for Rob at peg 14. Runner up Colin Reynolds [Bilston Ang Cent] had his fish, carp to 5lbs, on pellet down the edge and at metres, to weigh 38-15-0 at peg 16. Further along, at peg 19 29-12-0 gave third to Harry Colley [PI Bold] ahead of Tony Foster [PI Bold] on 26-4-0 at peg 8.
Simon Mottram [Drennan NW/ABC] won on Sunday with the top weight of the week, 91-1-0, a catch of carp to 6lbs and barbel to 4lbs. Peg 8 on the Willows was the scene of Simon’s win, and the fish fell to shallow fished caster.
Second came from peg 5 where Eric Bancroft [Rod & Gun] used corn and pellet for 79-8-0 of carp to 7lb and barbel to 3lbs. Andy Williams [Colmic Vespe] recorded 61-5-0 for third at peg 9 and over on peg 16 Dave Bowater [PI Bold] had 56-9-0 to finish things off.
