Boldings report

Boldings Report 19/5/09

SPORTS DESK 19/5/09

With weather conditions this week more akin to March than May, it was small wonder that there were some fluctuations in match weights at many of the local fisheries, although generally, you would have to say that sport was good for the sort of temperatures that anglers had to endure.

The Monday match gave the best winning catch at Boldings Pools when Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes) converted some recent secondary frame placings into an emphatic win. He drew peg 1 on the Middle Pool and put together the only ton up catch of the week by fishing pellet to each side of the corner peg to net 107-8-0, with carp to 8lbs making up the weight.

The remaining frame places were hotly contested, with Kevin Melville (Dorset Pools) leading the charge for second. He was on peg 3 on the Stock Pool and fished pellet at 5 metres and close in for carp to 5lbs to total 70-15-0. One fish behind Kev was Michael Payne (Notts) on 67-3-0 at Middle peg 3, Carl Foster (OB Wolves) was less than two pounds behind him on 65-8-0 at Middle 4 and Pete Ricketts (New Willenhall) was less than one pound behind Carl with a Hawthorn best of 64-9-0.

Ash pegs filed the frame on Wednesday when Ian Hughes (Shimano Wales) topped the card. Shallow caster, fished at 12 metres attracted mostly small carp, up to 4lbs at 3 to give Ian a return of 69-4-0, which put him 11lbs clear of Stuart Aston (Swan JT) at peg 18.

His 58-1-0 included carp to 6lbs and fell to pellet fished at 5 metres, and close in. In third was Ralph Johnson (Bilston Ang Cent) on 45-2-0 at peg 14 and Phil Shaw (Lower Hill) completed the line up with 43-3-0 at peg 7.

John Wild (Stafford) found carp to 8lbs at corner peg 4 on the Sycamore on Thursday to provide him with a 71-11-0 winner. He offered pellet at 5 metres and in the side, to edge ahead of Dave Barnard (Rod & Gun) at peg 47 on the same pool. Dave operated with similar tactics to the winner to find carp to 7lbs and bream to 3lbs to end on 66-15-0.

Third went to an Oak Pool best of 59-14-0 from Mick Jameson (mid Leisure) at peg 23, and 4th also came from the Oak when Ted Ecclestone (Stafford) scaled 54-11-0 at peg 27.

Mick Jameson moved up to the head of the frame on Saturday, leading the way from peg 30 on the Chestnut Pool. Alternating between 6 metres, and close in, with pellet, Mick picked off carp to 8lbs on his way to a level 59-0-0.

Over on Willows peg 15 Colin Reynolds(Bilston Ang Cent) switched between the 9 metre and 5 metre lines with pellet to make contact with carp to 5lbs, but couldn’t match the winners catch rate and finished on 41-14-0. Dave Barnard was in the frame again, third this time on 39-10-0 at Chestnut 35, and Thursdays winner John Wild had 38-3-0 at Chestnut 11 for 4th.

Sycamore peg 4 produced its second winner of the week when Steve Roberts (R&G) drew it on Sunday. He fished corn and pellet to hook carp to 8lbs, some on the 7 metre line and some from the corner, to total 70-2-0.

Gary Morris (OBW) also fished corn and pellet to net an Oak Pool best of 54-10-0 to finish ahead of a tie for third between Tim Probert (OBW) and Scott Doodson (R&G). They each had a level 51-0-0, Tim from Larch 24 and Scott from Oak 22.
