Boldings Report
The final round of the Shropshire Winter League was all about who would finish second and take the remaining semi-final place, after Maver Midlands confirmed themselves as League champions at the 5th round last week.
Rod & Gun were left to regret letting things slip after a decent start to their campaign, but at least they finished on a high note, winning the 6th and final round, which was held at Boldings Pools, where they were able to field several fishery experts.
Those experts proved their worth with a match winning score of 33 points, beating Maver by one point on the day. Weston Tackle made sure of taking the semi-final qualifying overall runner up spot in the table, when they took third on the day with 36.
Total Angling have had a yo-yo series, with a shared win, and a second placing being spoiled by two sixth places. They ended the series with a fourth, scoring 40 points. Oakengates Angling Centre really needed to win this one to have any chance of a place in the semi’s, but it was not to be, and they slipped to 5th on the day with 44 points, leaving last years champions Mosella Black Country to share 6th with Hodnet. They both had 46 points.
In the individual stakes, Steve Conway (Hodnet) made the frame for the third time in the series, finishing with a flourish with a match winning 54-7-0 on a day of raw weather. He was on peg 11 on the Stock Pool and fished maggot with long pole gear to take a catch of F1 carp weighing two and half as much as anyone else on the pool.
Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) came back from a five week break from fishing to support the Rod & Gun team effort, and took second place overall with a hawthorn Pool best of 47-1-0. Mel was drawn on peg 5, opposite the island and caught his F1’s on corn.
Final league table 1st Maver
Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) was back with a bang at Boldings Pools after taking a break. He finished second overall on the Shropshire Winter League match, but prior to that he recorded the top weight of the week when he won the Thursday open with 74-7-0. Corn and maggot fished in the side at corner peg 9 of the Ash Pool resulted in carp to 7 lbs dropping into Mel’s net.
Some way behind the winner, gary Morris (OB Wolves) headed the card on the Hawthorn Pool with a catch of carp to 5lbs, taken on pellet at 9 metres, which gave a return of 39-10-0.
Colin Reynolds (Bilston Ang Cent) had 37-5-0 from Ash 7 for third, then it was back to the Hawthorn for 4th when Pete Tolley (OB Wolves) scaled 36-5-0 at peg 3.
A level 37lbs gave Jack Hailey (OBW) a narrow win on Wednesday when he beat three weights from Chestnut with a Beech best. Carp in the 2lb to 4lb range responded to jacks pellet offerings at corner peg 11 on the Beech, while over at Chestnut peg 18, Phil Shaw (Wolverhampton) was netting carp to 5lbs and bream to 2lbs using pellet and maggot, close in and at 8 metres. He finished one fish short of the winner on 36-7-0.
Howard Williams (Weston Pools) had a close scrap for third and fourth, with Howard just getting the better of it by
Chestnut peg 30 came up with a winner on Saturday when competitors had freezing fog to contend with all day. Scott Doodson (R&G) went out to 14 metres with maggot to find the fish, netting carp to 4lbs, and a barbel of 4lbs on his way to 45-4-0.
Andy Bayliss-Kyte (Maver) used waggler and pole tactics at Ash peg 5 to net 37-12-0 for second. Pete Tolley followed up his Thursday placing with a third on this match, which he took with 32-15-0 at peg 37 on the Chestnut, which left Pete Ricketts (New Willenhall) on 30-0-0 to pick up 4th.
On Sunday Gary Morris moved up to top spot from second in the week and finished clear of the field when he put 58-13-0 on the scales at point peg 8 on the Sycamore. Corn and pellet, fished to each side of the point, and out at 8 metres tempted carp to 7lbs to help
Just around at peg 4 Paul Cartwright (OBW) also worked with corn and pellet to find carp to 5 and a total of 30-13-0 for second and a level 24-0-0 gave Tim Probert (Wolverhampton) 3rd.
