PELLET DOMINATES AT BOLDINGS

The top catches were down on the previous week but overall weights held up pretty well in the icy weather this week at Boldings Pools, and gave a series of tight frames.

Stuart Aston (Swan JT) had the best weight of the week, but only just, when he won the Saturday open with 38-11-0. Stuart was on corner peg 9 on the Ash Pool and presented pellet at 6 metres for carp in the 1lb to 4lb bracket to inch ahead of Dave Brown (Maver Tipton). He was on the opposite bank of the Ash, at peg 18, and offered pellet at 10 metres alternated with maggot at 6 metres, but slightly smaller fish left him 7ounces short of the winners total on 38-4-0.

Third went to Dave Craggs (OB Wolves) whose 26-4-0 from peg 21 topped the Chestnut card, and just behind him was Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) with an Oak best of 25-10-0 from peg 27.

Peg 27 on the Oak gave a similar weight on Sunday, but this time it proved a winner for Dave White (Maver Tipton) who narrowly beat Gareth Emlyn (Oakengates Angling Centre). Dave caught all his fish on the 8 metre line, using pellet, and Gareth switched between 10 metres and close in at peg 18 on the Ash, to net 25-14-0.

Gareth’s dad Kelvin Emlyn (Oakengates Ang Cent) finished third , with the best catch on the Beech Pool, 22-9-0, and had Paul Cartwright (OB Wolves) close behind him on 21-12-0 at Oak peg 23.

On Wednesday Martin Travis (Dorset Pools) made the trip over from Shrewsbury pay off when a mix of carp and skimmers worth 25-6-0 saw him collect the cash. His catch came from peg 4 on the Deepdale, and fell to pellet at 8 metres.

Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) framed again with 23-12-0 from Middle peg 3, which put him 2ounces ahead of Chris Jones (Crewe) on 23-10-0 at Deepdale 6. Jones only had 5 ounce to spare over 4th man Scott Doodson (Rod & Gun) who finished on 23-5-0 at Middle peg 11.

Colin Reynolds (Bilston Angling) had the relative luxury of a four pound advantage on Thursday, when he won from Ash peg 7 with 38-5-0, taken alternating between 5 and 10 metres, with pellet.

The Travis family were represented in the frame by Brian this time, who like brother Martin, was fishing under the Dorset banner. He was on the other side of the Ash, at peg 14, and had fish at 12 metres and close for 34-6-0.

Graham Roberts (OB Wolves) was the only ‘framer’ on the Hawthorn, taking third with 25-11-0 from peg 9, leaving Gary Morris (OB Wolves) to complete the prize line up with 24-8-0 at Ash 16.

MATSON MOVES UP.

Dave Matson (Maver Wolves) moved up to hit the high spot at Boldings Pools this week, claiming first place on the Saturday open with the best catch of the week, after several recent near misses.

Competitors sought the refuge of the sheltered back pools after the recent gales, and the Deepdale showed some fine form, providing Matson with a 65-7-0 winner. He was on peg 4, in the middle of the far bank, and alternated pellet at 12 metres with maggot close in, to tempt carp to 6lbs. On the opposite side of the pool, Andy Bayliss-Kyte (Rod & Gun) stuck with pellet at 10 metres to take carp to 5 lbs for a second placed 50-4-0 at peg 13.

Colin Reynolds (Bilston Angling) is something of a fixture in the frames of late, and was there again twice this week, showing up in third on this match with a Middle Pool best of 48-8-0. Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) also put in a pool best performance, topping the Hawthorn with 35-4-0 to take 4th overall.

Wednesday saw a close finish between two anglers on the Hawthorn and the Ash. Each was on peg 1 on their respective pools, and it was the Hawthorn which gave Gary Morris (OB Wolves) a slight advantage over the ever reliable Dave Barnard (Maver Wolves). Both caught carp to 5 lbs, Gary on corn and pellet at 6 metres, while ‘Barney’ fished close in with maggot on the Ash. At the finish, exactly 1lb separated the pair, Gary scaling 33-9-0 and Dave 32-9-0.

Colin Reynolds was third again, having 27-8-0 from peg 14 on the Ash, then it was back to the Hawthorn for 4th, when Mick Jameson (Middy ML) put a level 24lbs on the scales at peg 7.

There was a pound between first and second again on Sunday, and again two different pools provided the catches, with the Oak getting the better of the Ash this time.

Mark Stevens (OB Wolves) stepped up to the winners rostrum here, despite have smaller fish than runner-up Paul Turner (Fosters Tipton). Mark had carp in the 1lb to 4lb bracket, using pellet at 5 metres at peg 16 on the Oak, and clinched top spot with 29-1-0.

Paul offered caster and pellet at 6 metres and into the side at Ash 14, to find carp to 5lbs for 28-1-0. Only 9 ounces behind Turner, was Jason Elwell (Wednesbury) on 27-8-0, and Dave Barnard got in on the act again, taking a Beech Pool best of 26-4-0 for 4th.

DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR “FRANNER”

Popular Boldings regular John Francis (Rod & Gun) enjoyed a week-end double top at Boldings Pools, and recorded the top weight of the week in winning the Saturday open. Having pulled peg 15 on the Larch from the drawbar, John offered pellet out at 14 metres to tempt carp to 7lbs. As the match progressed he pulled steadily clear of Pete Plant (Maver Tipton) who operated with his favourite caster bait, alternated between the 5 and 10 metre lines at peg 24 on the Larch. By the finish “Franner” had slipped the net under a total of 51-9-0, while Pete had 42-3-0 of carp to 6lbs and roach to a pound. Third went to a Chestnut best of 36-13-0 from Paul Cartwright (OB Wolves) and fourth was taken by a Sycamore best of 31-5-0 by Alan Naylor (Rod & Gun).

On Sunday, Francis drew the peg which gave third place on Saturday, number 35 on the Chestnut, and converted it to a winner with another pellet approach. This time he alternated between 5 metres and 12 metres for a mixture of bream and carp, with bream to 2lbs and carp to8lbs helping him to edge out Phil Rhodes (Middy ML) by 6ozs. John scaled 33-2-0, while Phil, who caught carp to 5lbs at peg 14 on the Ash with maggot and pellet, finished on 32-`12-0.

Another Middy rod, Mick Jameson, finished in third with the top catch from the Beech, 27-2-0, and he was followed by Jason Elwell (Wednesbury) on 25-13-0 at Chestnut 37.

In the week there was more success for Kevin Melville (Phoenix Tackle) when he drew the beech pool again. This time he was on the point, peg 7, and didn’t have to go out far to find carp from 1lb to 4lbs with corn and maggot, to build a 36-12-0 winning net. Just around to the right of the winner, Boldings boss Ed Turner had bigger fish on pellet, in the side and out at 6 metres, but he couldn’t tempt enough of them, and had to be content with second when the scales settled at 29-0-0. Bob Conway (Lichfield) turned in the best performances on the Hawthorn to take third with 24-3-0 and an Oak best of 20-0-0 saw Mick Jameson in the frame again.

Jameson made three frames out of four on Thursday, but that elusive top spot was out of reach again, and he had to settle for second this time with yet another pool best.

The Man standing in his way here was Dave Hailey (WAC Tackle) who turned out to be the “framer” on the Deepdale Pool. He got the fish going on maggot, up in the water, at peg 12 and eased ahead by over 10lbs, ending the day on 45-10-0. Jameson was the pellet at peg 1 on the Middle Pool, where smaller fish left him on 34-6-0. Dave Barnard (Maver Wolves) led the way on the Stock Pool to finish a close third on 32-3-0 at peg 6 and next to him Nige Clarke (RAF Trabuco) completed the frame on 29-0-0.
