report

Boldings Pools were back in action this week, with a full programme of opens after a short break for a family wedding.

First up was the Monday open, which went the way of Mick Keene [ABC] who recorded a fairly emphatic win at Beech peg 26. Using maggot at 10 metres helped Mick to entice carp to 5lbs into the swim, which added up to a final weight of 55-3-0.

Round at peg 18 Dave Doughty [Woodend] worked with maggot at 8 metres for a catch of carp to 4lbs totaling 31-14-0, which put him into second. Nick Cooper [PI Boldings] took third when he weighed 24-9-0 at peg 7, and just behind him, on 24-3-0, was Stefan Davies [Shrewsbury] at peg 11.

Steve Owen [Monkhall] has enjoyed a good deal of success at Boldings in the past couple of months , and added two more wins to his list this week, the first of which came in the Wednesday open on the Sycamore Pool. Drawn on peg 25, Steve decided on a corn approach, and was rewarded with a mixture of carp and barbel, which came from the 12 metre line. Samples to 5lbs and 3lbs respectively, came to the net to give a final tally of 66-7-0.

Up at point peg 8 Steve Hall [Oswestry] alternated between the 8 metre and 12 metre lines to present his maggot bait, which brought 49-1-0 of carp to 6lbs and barbel to 3lbs to the scales. Some way behind the runner up was Dave Going [Poets] who took third with 23-12-0 from peg 39, and close behind him, on 23-1-0 at peg 48 was Tony Foster [PI Bold].

Stefan Davies followed up his fourth place on Monday with a win on Thursday when he finished one fish ahead of Mick Jameson [PI Bold]. Stef was on Chestnut peg 7 and operated with shallow fished maggot at 12 metres to attract carp to 5lbs and bream to 2lbs, to end the day on 44-2-0.

Almost opposite the winner, at peg 32, Mick had all carp in the 4lbs range on maggot at 10 metres, to fall just short on 42-1-0. Mick Keene and Dave Doughty both framed again, Mick picking up third with his Oak Pool top weight of 30-1-0 at peg 4 and Dave was fourth with another Oak Pool weight, 27-8-0 from peg 31.

The same pegs which gave first and second on the Thursday match, did so again on Saturday, with Chestnut 7 giving the top weight of the week.

Mark Stevens [Stevens Tackle] drew the peg this time, and found that bigger fish had moved in, which helped to boost his figures to 85-15-0. Carp to 6lbs and bream to 3lbs put in an appearance to snap up Mark's maggot bait, which he presented at 8 metres and 12 metres.

Carp to 4lbs still occupied peg 32, and they were less inclined to feed, leaving Dave Cole [Bronx] trailing some way behind the winner on 36-12-0. Russ Allen [Oswestry] picked up third at peg 30, where he weighed 32-1-0 and at peg 4 Dave Pritchard [PI Bold] had 28-14-0 in fourth.

Steve Owen secured his second winner's purse of the week when he topped the Sunday card from Chestnut peg 6. Opting for a maggot attack this time, Steve picked off carp to 5lbs and bream to 2lbs on the 12 metre line, to finish on 37-14-0.

Chestnut 32 featured again, with another runner up weight, this time for Colin Reynolds [Bilston Ang Cent] who managed to find some bream to go with the carp, but not enough to quite keep up with the winner, and ended the day on 31-8-0. Chris Jones [Crewe] led the way on the Sycamore to finish third overall on 29-2-0 at peg 22, and back on the Chestnut, Brian Mathews [Telford] scaled 25-4-0 at peg 13 to pick up fourth.

Report

Boldings report    11-1-17.

Mid-week matches were hit by the weather at Boldings Pools, with only the Monday open going ahead.

Steve Forest [Nottingham] made his trip across the Midlands worthwhile by claiming the top prize. Alternating between maggot waggler and leger tactics, Steve picked off carp to 6lbs on his way to 38-8-0 at Willows peg 5.

On the opposite bank Dave Doughty [Woodend] fished the pole at 10 metres to offer maggot at peg 17, and had carp to 5lbs in his runner up 30-1-0. Third went to the top weight from the Chestnut, 21-12-0, which was recorded by Dave Pritchard [PI Boldings] at peg 10. Back on the Willows, at peg 4, next to the winner, Morgan Davidson [Monkhall] weighed 20-13-0 in fourth.

After the mid-week ice melted the water was very cold at the week-end, which made for some slow going.

Saturday saw the third round of the Preston Innovations/Boldings winter league        in which Steve Roberts [Oakengates Ang Cent] consolidated a good start to the league with a hard earned win. He was on Ash peg 5, and worked maggot at 14 metres to net 23-11-0 of carp to 4lbs.

Similar tactics at Sycamore peg 33 put 21-12-0 of carp to 4lbs on the scales to hand second to Steve Owen [Monkhall].  Dave Doughty had his second 'framer' of the week when a level 16-0-0 from Ash 16 put him into third, just ahead of Gary Gollins [Swan] on 15-7-0 at Willows peg 16.

Eric Bancroft [Rod & Gun] was top of the list on Sunday with an even 22-0-0 from Larch peg 16, where maggot at 12 metres found carp to 4lbs.

Dave Lloyd [Maver] had carp to 4lbs and skimmers to 1lb on maggot in a runner up 18-10-0 at Chestnut peg 30. Steve Owen was in the frame again, his Oak Pool best of 17-10-0 giving him third at peg 16, with Paul Evans [PI Bold] only two ounces behind with 17-8-0 at Oak peg 27.

Boldings report    4-1-17.

Robbie Griffiths [Preston Innovations] topped a close individual frame in the Preston Innovations/Boldings Pools annual Christmas Pairs match, which attracted 74 entries.

Robbie drew peg 20 on the Beech Pool and was involved in a fish for fish battle with Adam Rumble [Fosters] at Beech peg 23. Both fished maggot, Robbie at 12 metres and Adam at 10 metres, and it slightly better fish which tipped the scales Robbie's way, he had carp to 6lbs to make up his 58-6-0, while carp to 5lbs gave Adam a final tally of 56-12-0.

Paul Biggs [Telford] was less than a pound and a half behind second with his Willows Pool top score of 55-6-0 wasn't far short of the mark with his Hawthorn best of 51-10-0.

Top pair, with a perfect score of 2 points were Maver rods Dave Brown and Dave Lloyd, with Robbie Griffiths and Nathan Spain second on 5 points.

Weights tumbled in the icy conditions on Wednesday when there was another hard fought battle for the top prize, and at the finish only two ounces spanned the top two weights.

Maggot was the bait again, with Paul Hemming [Monkhall] working it at 10 metres out from Beech peg 18 to catch the attention of carp to 4lbs and skimmers to 1lb, which he used to build a 25-7-0 total.

At peg 20, Jamie Langford [Preston Innov] had carp to 4lbs as well as skimmers and roach to 1lb on the 12 metre line to scale 25-5-0. Christmas Eve winner Shane Rogers [Oak Ang Cent] filled third with 16-11-0 from Beech peg 26.

Colin Reynolds [Bilston Ang Cent] worked Chestnut peg 7 to good effect on Thursday with a pellet and maggot combination on the 8 metre line. Carp to 5lbs and bream to 2lbs showed enough interest to give wining figures of 49-5-0.

The next three weights all came from the Sycamore, with Mick Jameson [PI Bold] proving best of the three by scaling 41-1-0 at peg 13. Maggot at 10 metres put carp to 6lbs and skimmers to 1lb o the scales for Mick. Steve Woodhall [HKAC] pipped Gary Morris [PI Bold] to third by 24-11-0 to 24-6-0.

Three different pools provided the top three weights on Saturday, with Simon Christian [Sedgley] setting the pace from peg 14 on the Willows Pool. Carp to 6lbs responded to his maggot bait to give a return of 65-5-0.

Over on the Chestnut, Gary Morris added a second to third placing by booking in a level 56-0-0 of carp to 4lbs, which he caught on pellet at peg 10. 30-10-0 from Beech peg 18 handed third to Richard Davenport [Oswestry] and just under a pound behind him was Dave Brown [Maver] on 29-11-0 at Chestnut 36.
