report

Boldings report    23-2-16.

Keith Powell [PI Boldings] picked up a win at Boldings Pools on Monday when he drew peg 9 on the Hawthorn Pool. With maggot still the dominant bait, Keith worked it close to the island and to the near bank, for a 57-10-0 net of carp to 6lbs.

Chris Holmes [Middle Severn Angling] was on the Beech Pool and went out to 12 metres on peg 18 to find his runner up 41-9-0 of carp to 4lbs. Third came from the Hawthorn in the shape of Steve Forest [Nomads] whose 35-11-0 from peg 5 just kept Colin Reynolds [Bilston Ang Cent] at bay with his 35-3-0 from Beech 26.

The winning weight dipped to 45-5-0 on Wednesday when Tony Woolaston [Fatty's] got ahead in a close finish. He was on Willows peg 17 and presented maggot at 8 metres for a mix of carp to 4lbs and barbel to 3lbs.

One more fish would have made all the difference to Tony Foster [PI Bold] at peg 4 on the Sycamore. He fished pellet and maggot into the corner and out at 10 metres to pick off carp to 5lbs, but the end of the match came just a little too soon, leaving him on 42-3-0.  Paul Evans [PI Bold] was in the opposite corner from Foster, and only one more fish behind on 40-13-0. Fourth came from the Willows when Gary Steele [Kings] weighed 36-4-0 at Willows peg 4.

What a difference a day made, when, although it was icy on Thursday, the winning weight shot up to over 122lbs, the best weight of year so far. Clive Wynn [Tricast Weston] was the beneficiary of the big improvement, which he made the most of at peg 16 on the Larch, by fishing shallow with maggot, close to the weed bed. Carp to 6lbs homed in on the bait and pushed Clive's final tally to 122-2-0.

Fellow Weston rod Howard Williams tagged a second place onto his fourth of last week by posting a Sycamore top score of 72-15-0, which was mostly barbel in the 4lbs class, caught on maggot at 8 metres from peg 50. Terry Edwards [Swan Elite] was another 'framer' from last week who was in the picture again, his 61-2-0 from Ash peg 14 giving him third. Like Sycamore peg 50, peg 4 featured again, giving Paul Evans [PI Bold] fourth for his 59-11-0.

Steve Roberts [Oakengates Ang Cent] hit 'the hundred' on Saturday when he made Sycamore peg 8 a winner for the first time in quite a while. Steve employed close in maggot tactics to get the interest of carp to 5lbs and barbel to 4lbs, which built up to a 117-15-0 winning bag.

Marshall Sherwood [PI Bold] is a name to keep an eye on for the future. He is 13 years old and has only recently started open match fishing, but he beat some top class opposition to claim second spot on this match. He was drawn on Sycamore peg 48 and bagged carp to 7lbs together with barbel to 3lbs, by alternating long pole with close in tactics to offer maggot, and finished the day on 84-3-0. Third went to a Willows best of 62-1-0 from peg 5 by Shane Rogers [Oak Ang Cent] and fourth

In spite of the signs of an early spring, like blackthorn bushes in blossom and quite of bit of green beginning to show in the hedgerows, no one expected the all ton frame which the Sunday open produced.

Dave Hailey [PI Bold] made sure that Clive Wynn had a short reign as holder of the best weight of the year by setting a new standard on this match. Peg 50 on the Sycamore featured for the third time as Dave hammered out 142-5-0 on short pole in front of the peg and to each side. Maggot brought in carp to 7lbs and barbel to 4lbs, which built up the winning total.

Runner up Andy Kyte [Middle Severn Angling] also had carp and barbel at Oak peg 31, with fish of 8lbs and 3lbs coming to his maggot bait and returning 128-5-0. Steve Roberts was in the list again, third this time with 114-6-0 from Sycamore 46, and Colin Reynolds also picked up again, his 110-0-0 giving him fourth at Sycamore peg 8.

report

After the brief respite in the weather on Sunday last week it was back to more miserable Monday conditions to start this week of at Boldings Pools, with a gale driven downpour which lasted most of the day.

John Bridgwood [Kings] rode the storm best to win the open on the Larch fairly comfortably with 51-10-0. John was drawn on point peg 16 and included some decent roach together with carp to 4lbs, which he tempted with pellet at 10 metres.

Owen Boswell [PI Boldings] chose to fish maggot at 4 metres and 12 metres at peg 16, a choice which provided him with a runner up 36-10-0 of carp to 3lbs. Up at peg 2 Dave Doughty [Woodend] picked up third with his 28-2-0.

The rain had gone on Wednesday, but temperatures had dropped to give a fairly hard frost, a fact which helped Mick Jameson [PI Bold] to decide on a straight lead approach, with maggot bait to tackle peg 50 on the Sycamore. The ploy paid off with a catch of mostly barbel in the 4lb class giving Mick a 58-1-0 winner.

Runner up Pete Sayers [Bronx] was on the [Chestnut, at peg 32, and used maggot on the pole at 3 metres and 8 metres to net carp to 4lbs and bream to 2lbs which gave a tally of 47-6-0. Terry Edwards [Swan Elite] kept his run of form going with a third best 38-8-0 from Chestnut 7, which put him 5 ounces in front of Clive Wynn [Tricast Weston] on 38-3-0 at Chestnut 18.

On a slightly warmer Thursday match Steve Owen [Monkhall] picked up the purse by bringing 62-8-0 to the scales after he drew point peg 7 on the Beech. Maggot held sway again, with Steve offering the bait at 12 metres out, as well as in the margins, to pick off carp to 6lbs and bream to 2lbs.

Peg 16 on the Larch featured again, with the maggot bait of Eric Bancroft [Rod & Gun] bringing in a mix of carp, bream and roach weighing 46-1-0. Mick Jameson added a third to his previous days first by netting 43-2-0 at Beech peg 11. Fourth came from the Larch where Keith Williams [Kings] scaled 39-11-0.

The week-end matches brought a double delight for Dave Brown [Maver] who won on Saturday and Sunday. His Saturday victory came from the Willows Pool, where both straight lead and pole tactics with maggot bait helped to put together a 58-7-0 mix of carp to 5lbs and barbel to 4lbs at peg 7.

Beech peg 7 came up with another frame weight, with Alun Jones [Drennan NW] coming in a close second from it. Alun used maggot at 3 metres and 8 metres for a net of carp to 4lbs and bream to 2lbs totaling 56-3-0. Andy Bishop [Bronx] had Jones in his sights all day from Beech 26, almost opposite peg 7, and he matched him fish for fish, finishing only 1 ounce behind on 56-2-0. Next to the winner, at Willows peg 8, 49-8-0 put Les Thompson [Matrix] into fourth.

There was nothing close about the winning margin on Sunday when 'Brownie' had two and half times the next best weight, as he posted  the weeks best weight at 89-7-0. Working with straight lead and punched bread at Larch peg 8, Dave bagged a haul of carp to 8lbs.

There was not much between the remaining prize winners, with just over 2lbs covering all three places. Sean Barber [Maver] proved 'best of the rest' with a level 36-0-0 on maggot, fished to the stumps at Oak peg 27. Mark Taylor [Shakespeare] just best Matt Stobbs [Oak Ang Cent] to third by 34-9-0 to 33-13-0.

Boldings report    10-2-16.

On a gale lashed Boldings Pools  last Monday Graham Roberts      [PI Boldings] made the most of some shelter at peg 10 on the Stock Pool to establish a clear win in the first of the weeks matches at the complex. Working two swims, one at 10 metres and one close to the bank, both baited with maggot, Dave picked up carp to 5lbs as he built up 60.14-0 winning total.

Around the corner, at peg 7, Dave Cole [Bronx] elected to bait with pellet to fish at similar distances to the winner, but had a slower catch rate, as well as a smaller stamp of fish, with carp to 4lbs giving a return of 34-0-0.  Peg 11 on the Middle Pool provided Dave Doughty [Woodend] with 31.8-0 for third and in a close fourth was Tony Foster [PI Bold] on 30-7-0.

Last week's double winner Terry Edwards [Swan Elite] added to his haul with another Wednesday win, this one coming from the Beech Pool where pellet proved best.         Sticking to the 13 metre line at peg 11, Terry had all carp in the 4lb bracket to win with 42.14-0.

Mick Jameson [PI Bold] swapped between 4 metres and 10 metres at peg 16, and like the winner had carp to 4lbs in his net of    34.15-0. Bob Tromans [Fiery Holes] finished close behind second on 32.11-0 at peg 7, leaving Paul Gregory [Swan Elite] to complete the prize winners with 23.8-0 at peg 20.

Having warmed up with a fourth place on Wednesday Paul Gregory moved to the top of the list on Thursday, heading a close frame from peg 35 on the Chestnut. Maggot at 4 metres out from the peg attracted carp to 7lbs which gave Paul figures of 48.12-0.

Clive Wynn [Tricast Weston] had carp to 5lbs and bream to 2lbs by fishing maggot to the island from Chestnut peg 27. He could have done with one less bream and one more carp as he finished just over 2lbs off first on 46.10-0.

Terry Edwards was there again, only a pound off second with a Larch Pool best of 45-8-0 from peg 24. Fourth was picked up by Paul Evans [PI Bold] at Chestnut 30 where he weighed 36-5-0.

Saturday threw some pretty awful weather at competitors, with heavy rain driven by strong winds making the match a test of endurance as well as angling skill. Andy Kyte [Middle Severn Angling] coped best to post 63-11-0 for victory. Using maggot at 6 metres and in the margins of Middle Pool peg brought a catch of carp to 4lbs to put Andy at the top of the list.

Swan Elite rod Gary Steele was just along the bank from the winner at corner peg 5 and presented his maggot bait into the corner and out in front at 6 metres, where he found carp to 5lbs lurking which helped him to figures of 52-3-0. Opposite Gary, at peg 8, Richard Davenport [Oswestry] put his name on third by scaling 36-14-0, which put him just ahead of a Deepdale top weight of 35-11-0 by Matt Stobbs [Oakengates Ang Cent].

Although there was some winter sunshine on Sunday morning, there was still a biting wind, with showers moving in later in the day.

Despite the cold wind Dave Brown [Maver] set the top weight of the week in winning from peg 20 on the Beech Pool. Maggot at 12 metres produced a mixed bag of carp, roach and skimmers weighing 72-15-0.

Andy Kyte added a second to his win when his Larch Pool top score of 69-2-0 left him one fish short. Andy fished maggot and pellet on the 4 metre line at peg 4. Beech peg 7 came up with another third place, this time for Colin Reynolds [Bilston Ang Cent] whose 55-4-0 narrowly beat the Chestnut best of 54-3-0 set by Steve Roberts [Oak Ang Cent].

Boldings report    2-2-16.

Colin Reynolds [Bilston Ang Cent] had plenty of Monday open wins to his credit at Boldings Pools last year, and this week he opened his 2016 account with victory in a closely contested match.

Fishing maggot close to the stumps at peg 27 on the Oak Pool put Colin in touch with carp to 4lbs, and at the end of the day he had slipped the net under a total of 60-6-0 of them.

Over on the dam wall, at peg 4, Owen Boswell [PI Boldings] worked maggot at 4 metres an close to the paddles, where he found carp to 5lbs but was left needing one more when the whistle went as the scales stopped at 57-2-0. Terry Edwards [Swan Elite] kicked off a very successful week with a third place when he weighed in the top catch on the Beech Pool, 50-2-0, which came from peg 32. Fourth also came from the Beech when Bob Tromans [Fiery Holes] recorded 45-12-0 at peg 15.

Terry Edwards exchanged third for first on Wednesday, scoring the first of two wins. This one came from the Stock Pool where maggot at 6 metres helped to put together 69-1-0 of carp to 5lbs.

On the Deepdale Pool Paul Evans PI Bold] used caster and maggot close to the paddles at peg 14 for a net of carp in the 3lb bracket weighing 52-9-0. Stock peg 11 came up with 48-15-0 for Alun Jones [Drennan] and a Middle Pool best of 46-11-0 put Ken Humphreys [Oswestry] into fourth spot.

Thursday brought the second win for Terry Edwards after the action moved to the Larch Pool and he switched to pellet as bait. Carp to 5lbs made up his catch again, which this time came from the 8 metre line at Larch peg 16, and totaled 58-13-0.

Round at peg 22 Dave Brown [Maver] alternated between 13 metres and close in with maggot to record his runner up 45-7-0 of carp to 5lbs. Steve Owen [Monkhall] was close behind on 43-6-0 at peg 26, and a level 36-0-0 gave fourth to Tony Woolaston [Fatty's] at peg 6.

Steve Hall [Oswestry] followed up his Sunday win last week with a Saturday success this week, heading a tight frame from peg 20 on the Beech, where maggot, fished long as well as in the side gave figures of 43-1-0.

Next to Steve, at peg 18, Gary Gollins [Swan] pressed hard all the way to the finish, finally scaling 40-7-0. Andy Price [Oakengates Ang Cent] finished third for the second Saturday on the trot when he weighed in 37-13-0 at peg 15. That left Tony Foster [PI Bold] to complete the frame with his Hawthorn Pool top weight of 35-9-0.

For the first time at Boldings the top weight of the week was shared by two anglers when on Sunday Paul Roberts [PI Bold] recorded 69-1-0, the same weight that Terry Edwards won with on Wednesday.

Paul had his catch at peg 32 on the Chestnut, and had carp to 5lbs with bream to 2lbs on maggot presented at 4 metres and 13 metres.

Runner up Steve Roberts [Oak Ang Cent] included some nice barbel to 4lbs along with carp to 6lbs in his 56-3-0 on maggot at Willows peg 16. Dave Bowater [PI Bold] was one fish behind on 53-5-0 at Chestnut 21, and only 2 ounces behind him, on 53-3-0 was Scott Doodson [Maver] at Chestnut 30.
