Boldings report

Boldings report    30-12-14.

Maggot took over as the dominant bait at Boldings Pools this week after Gareth Emlyn [Oakengates Ang Cent] set the standard on Christmas Eve with the top weight of week, 104-8-0, which he followed up with the second best of the week for another win on Saturday.

Peg 7 on the Beech Pool was the peg to produce the goods for Gareth on Christmas Eve, after he concentrated his feed on the 5 metre line to hold the interest of a succession of carp to 7lbs.

The remaining frame weights all came from the Ash Pool, where the winners dad, Kel Emlyn [Oak Ang Cent] led the way with another maggot attack. Kel was on peg 14 and had his fish, carp to 5lbs, at 5 metres and close in to the side, to weigh 72-11-0.

Shane Rogers made it a trio of Oakengates rods at the top of the frame by finishing a close third on 71-6-0 at Ash 5. Pete Ricketts [New Willenhall] rounded things off with 55-13-0 for fourth at Ash 16.

Colin Reynolds [Bilston Ang Cent] worked off his Christmas dinner by winning the Boxing Day open on the Larch Pool, heading a tight frame from peg 6. he bucked the maggot trend by offering pellet to tempt carp to 5lbs on the 6 metre line and at the whistle he had a level 53-0-0 to offer up to the scales.

On the other side of the pool, at peg 26, Brian Clarke [Colmic] worked pellet and maggot, alternating between 6 metres and 14 metres to net 49-4-0 of carp to 5lbs to edge out Ben Stamford [Monkhall] by one ounce. Ben had his 49-3-0 from peg 24, and was only one fish ahead of Josh Humphreys[ABC] who ended the day on 47-14-0 at peg 16.

Saturdays winner for Gareth Emlyn came from peg 16 on the Ash, where carp to 7lbs again made up his catch. Maggot at 10 metres, combined with close in tactics had the fish feeding and Gareth posted 90-0-0 for victory to seal a successful Christmas campaign.

On the opposite bank, at peg 7, Sean Barber [Maver] worked the 14 metre line, and close in with maggot for a haul of carp to 5lbs totalling 71-14-0 which gave him second.

Colin Reynolds made the list again, although he was some way behind second with his third placed 31-14-0 from peg 5. Over at peg 18 Paul Wheeler [PI Boldings] weighed 28-7-0 in fourth.

Boldings hosted the Preston Innovations sponsored Christmas Pairs open, arranged by Scott Doodson and Steve Roberts, on Sunday when 70 competitors lined the banks.

There was a tie on points between the pairing of Nathan Spain and Robbie Griffiths who had the same 2 points score as Simon Richardson and John Chapman. Spain and Griffiths were the winning pair with a superior weight. Their aggregate was 123-2-0 while Richardson and Chapman had a total of 101-0-0.

Third and fourth was decided on weight after A Bennett and C Barlow tied on 3 points with Dave Lloyd and Dave Brown. Bennett and Barlow had a weight of 100-0-0 while Lloyd and Brown had 80-0-0.

Top individual was A Bennett [Diawa Guru/Drennan NW] with 72-15-0 on long pole with maggot and pellet at Beech peg 20.

Nathan Spain [Total Angling] fished maggot at 14 metres on Ash peg 7 to net his runner up 66-10-0. At Beech 7 |J Howarth [Tricast] had 57-1-0 for third, closely followed by Robbie Griffiths [ABC] on 56-8-0 at Chestnut 32.

Happy New Year Ed and Sue.

I have adjusted the winning pairs weight as 66-10-0 and 56-8-0 doesn’t  come to 127. Hope this is OK.

Boldings report

Boldings report    23-12-14.

Boldings Pools maintained its good winter form this week to give a frame average weight of well over 50lbs per angler.

Mick Jameson [PI Boldings] got things off to fine start with the top weight of the week when he took the Monday honours with an even 70-0-0. Drawn peg 11 on the Beech Pool, Mick had a busy day with carp in the 1lb to 4lbs range, which he found on the 8 metre line using pellet.

Paul Hemmings [Monkhall] was on the Hawthorn Pool at peg 7 and offered maggot at 10 metres as well as down the side, to contact some better carp, with samples to 9lbs giving a runner up 46-7-0. Last Mondays winner Mick Foan [Oakengates Angling Centre] picked up third at Beech peg 7 by scaling 39-10-0, while fourth came from Hawthorn 11 when Eric Bancroft [Rod & Gun] weighed 37-5-0.

The Wednesday winners purse went to Mick Keene [ABC] at peg 5 on the Sycamore, not a peg which wins many of the opens, but it responded to pellet this time. C Carp to 6lbs and bream to 2lbs were ready for the bait, which Mick presented at 14 metres to net 64-14-0.

Facing Mick, at peg 49 was Tony Foster [PI Bold] who also caught carp and bream, with fish of 7lbs and 2lbs coming from the 12 metre line to give a total of 54-9-0. Howard Williams [Weston Pools] was only three ounces behind second with 54-6-0 at peg 8, and Mick Jameson had another ‘framer’ by weighing 52-1-0 at peg 24.

Howard Williams swapped third for first on Thursday when his haul of carp to 6lbs with bream to 2lbs took the scales to 59-3-0. Pegged 35 on the Chestnut, Howard worked with maggot at 12 metres to record his win.

Mick Foan had another prize pick up when he posted a Sycamore to score of 50-12-0. His net of carp to 5lbs was taken on pellet at 8 metres from corner peg 50. Over in the opposite corner, at peg 4 Chris Holmes [Middle Severn Angling] put his name on third by handing over 42-11-0 to the scalesman, which left Paul Evans [PI Bold] to claim fourth with his 40-15-0 at peg 48.

Things were a bit slower on Saturday and 46-11-0 from Beech peg 20 was enough to hand victory to Kel Emlyn [Oak Ang Cent]. His catch consisted of carp to 5lbs, and fell to maggot at 5 metres.

Oak peg 22 gave second to Steve Hall [Oswestry] who finished just over 4lbs short of the target when his net of carp to 4lbs added up to 42-6-0. He also caught on maggot, which he presented at 10 metres and close in to the bank. Up at Oak peg 1 Colin Reynolds [Bilston Ang Cent] scaled 38-15-0 to pip Dave Brown [Maver] to third. Dave was on Beech peg 5 and had one 38-14-0.

The Boldings Fur & Feather attracted an entry of 70 on Sunday when the Chestnut Pool proved best, after a peg to peg battle for the main prize. Simon Mottram [Brennan NW/ABC] was the man who took home the main share of the goodies, after his 14 metre maggot attack at Chestnut peg 16 put 66-8-0 of carp to 5lbs in the weigh net.

Next to Simon at peg 18 Dave Craggs [Maver] used similar tactics and netted carp to 7lbs, but not enough of them, and he ended the match on 60-4-0.

Third went to a Sycamore Pool best weight of 59-1-0 by Shane Rogers [Oak Ang Cent] at peg 50. A Willows best of 52-13-0 gave Mick Keene his second frame of the week, fifth placed Mark Skelton {Oak Ang Cent] had his 51-10-0 from Chestnut peg 38 and a Larch best of 51-5-0 saw Simon Richardson [Maver] complete the frame.
