Boldings report

Boldings Report 29/4/09

Harry Colley (OB Wolves) opened up the week at Boldings Pools with the top catch of the week to win the Monday Affordable open. Meat and pellet fished to the island, combined with corn in the side, had carp to 9lbs lining up at peg 23 on the Chestnut to give Harry 113-9-0 at the whistle. Andy Williams (Vespe) used corn and maggot, close in at peg 28, for a mix of carp and bream, but was some way short of the winner at the finish, when the scales settled at 62-14-0.

Over on peg 7 Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) inched a pound ahead of Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes) to claim third with 47-8-0, leaving Bob to pick up 4th with his 46-7-0 at peg 21.

Pete Plant Jnr (OBW) headed the list on Wednesday when he put a corn based 55-11-0 on the scales at peg 48 on the Sycamore. Carp to 6lbs, caught close, made up the winning catch. Exactly 6lbs behind the winner was Phil Shaw (Lower Hill) who found his fish with corn and pellet fished to the paddles at peg 16, with fish to 5lbs making up Phil’s 49-11-0.

Third went to Mick Keene (MSTA) with another Sycamore catch, 47-14-0, which came from peg 13, and fourth to Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) who had a Willows pool best of 32-6-0.

A pair of Birkenhead raiders made off with the lions share of the coin on Thursday when Barry Bush and Chris Oakenshaw shared first place with 74-14-0 each. Barry had top weight on the Oak by fishing pellet, up in the water at 12 metres from peg 8 and Chris fished caster, shallow at 12 metres at peg 30 on the Chestnut.

Andy Williams framed again, picking up third with 64-2-0 at chestnut 32, then back on the Oak Carl Foster OBW) had 59-15-0 at peg 29 for 4th.

On Saturday 130 rods lined up for the Fish ’O’ Mania qualifier, and it was Boldings based Mark Stevens who booked his place in the £25,000 Final, after drawing peg 15 on the Hawthorn Pool. Worm, fished to the paddles saw mark netting carp from 1lb to 4lbs, to finish on 95-14-0. Anthony King finished 8lbs short of glory with a Stock Pool best of 74-10-0, Jeff Moors (Border) was third, his 74-10-0 also coming from the Stock and diagonally opposite the winner on the Hawthorn, James Walsh had 62-15-0 in 4th.

Mark Stevens was more than a little pleased that Ian Hughes (Shimano Wales) left it until Sunday to ‘top the ton’ from point peg 29 on the Oak. He took the winners purse with 104-4-0 when carp in the 1lb to 5lb bracket responded to his shallow caster tactics, with all the fish coming from the 12 mete line.

Runner up Eric Bancroft (R&G) found carp and bream fishing maggot, shallow and in the side at peg 35 on the Chestnut to scale 89-4-0. Graham Roberts (OBW) was top man on the Sycamore with 81-3-0 at peg 25 and just behind him was Dave Barnard (R&G) on 80-4-0 at peg 30.

Boldings report

Boldings Report 21/4/09

An easterly wind and some strong Spring sunshine at Boldings Pools on Sunday failed to put a damper on sport and the top three all beat the 100lbs mark, with Eric Bancroft (Rod & Gun) posting the top weight of the week to beat a big turn-out.

Eric was drawn on Ash peg 7 and plundered a shoal of carp up to 6lbs using shallow fished maggot, offered at 10 metres, to scale 145-1-0.

Runner up Dave Craggs (OB Wolves) was on the point at peg 8 on the Sycamore where caster and maggot, fished to each side of the peg attracted the attention of carp to double figures, but Dave couldn’t match the catch rate of the winner, and had to settle for second with his 111-3-0.

Third man Nick Roberts (Rod & Reel) was to the right of the winner at peg 5 on the Ash, where he netted 103-7-0, and fourth placed Steve Giles (Oakengates Angling Centre) was to the left where he scaled 92-8-0 to complete a great top four.

At the start of the week Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) took the winners purse on Monday when he put together a 79-15-0 winner at peg 17 on the Chestnut, fishing pellet at 5 metres and close for carp to 7lbs.

Martin Davenport (Dorset Pools) also fished pellet at 5 metres at peg 30 on the same pool, but alternated with maggot, close in for 69-1-0-0 to fill second spot. Gareth Emlyn (Oakengates Ang Cent) picked up third and an Oak Pool top when he scaled 65-2-0 at Oak 22, and a Willows best of 64-2-0 gave Keith Miller (New Willenhall) a close 4th.

Wednesday and Thursday saw big fluctuation in weights, with Wednesday giving much the better catches. Richard Lawson (Maver Midlands) claimed the coin with a 117-5-0 haul at peg 11 on the Stock Pool, the catch coming to shallow fished pellet, and including carp to 6lbs.

Hawthorn peg 3 continued with its good recent form and provided Ian Hughes (Shimano Wales) with 111-1-0 for the runner up prize. Ian had fish from 1lb to 5lbs on caster, fished up in the water. Phil Shaw (Lower Hill) led the way on the Ash Pool to finish third overall with 88-12-0 at peg 16, and Ash peg 9 filled 4th again, this time for John Wild (Stafford) who had 73-8-0.

A change in the direction of the wind on Thursday brought weights down to half those of the previous day, and 50-1-0 from Sycamore peg 25 gave victory to Dave Barnard (Rod & Gun), who worked with pellet at 12 metres for carp to 7lbs.

Brian Clarke (Maver) was on peg 7 on the Chestnut and switched between maggot at 8 metres and pellet close in, which saw him net 47-9-0for second. Eric Bancroft warmed up for his week-end success with a third placed 36-8-0 at Chestnut 4 and Ed Turner (OBW) finished off the frame with 30-11-0 at Sycamore 48.

It stayed cold all day on Saturday when the Ash Pool dominated the frame, giving the top four catches. Best of these came from Mark Stevens (Willis Worms) who put 79-9-0 on the scales at peg 18. Mark had his fish, carp to 7lbs, on caster, fished shallow in open water, and on corn close in.

Along the bank from the winner, Steve Roberts (R&G) fished corn and maggot close in, to net 67-5-0 for second, well ahead of Michael Toole (OBW)  who had 45-9-0 on the opposite bank. Mel Kitson (R&G) had a level 45-0-0 at Ash 14 for 4th and Colin Reynolds (Bilston Ang Cent) chipped in a Beech best of 44-12-0 for 5th.

Boldings report

Boldings Report 15/4/09

Kevin Melville (Dorset Pools) had some more success at Boldings Pools this week when he topped the 100lbs mark to win the Monday open with 100-10-0. The catch came from the Hawthorn pool, and Kev didn’t have to go far for his fish, as carp to 8lbs came from close in and off the 4 metre line at peg 3, where pellet got the fish going.

Eric Bancroft (Rod & Gun) was on the point on the Beech Pool where corn, worked to either side of the peg put an even 99-0-0 in the net for second.

Andy Williams (Vespe) was a close third on 98-2-0 at Hawthorn 10 and in 4th was Chris Holmes (BAS) on 78-13-0 at Hawthorn 13.

Harry Colley (OB Wolves) opted for meat on Wednesday to tackle peg 21 on the Chestnut and found carp to 9lbs to help him to a 93-13-0 winner. Ian Hughes (Shimano Wales) offered caster close in and shallow in open water at peg 16 on the Sycamore for 73-15-0 of carp to 6lbs.

Back on the Chestnut John Wild (Stafford) had 64-10-0 for third at peg 38 and Tony Foster (OBW) took 48-5-0 from Sycamore 39 for 4th.

The Ash Pool gave the top three weights on Good Friday, with shallow fished pellet accounting for the top two. First was Sean Barber (Maver) whose 96-9-0 included carp to 6lbs, and came from the 12 metre line, and almost opposite him was fellow Maver rod Andy Bayliss-Kyte, who also caught at 12 metres. His fish were of a smaller stamp, with samples to 4lbs adding up to 91-4-0.At Ash 16 Nige Clarke  (Fox Match) netted 79-9-0 for third and a Willows Pool best of 72-6-0 put Kevin Melville in the frame again.

Shallow pellet tactics dominated again on Saturday and gave another close finish. Simon Jukes (OBW) ran out winner this time by netting 79-9-0 using the method for carp to 8lbs at peg 29 on the Sycamore. Andy Bayliss-Kyte was the man pipped to top spot again, finishing 2lbs short on 77-8-0 at Chestnut 32. Round at chestnut 23 John Wild recorded third again when he scaled 73-6-0 and Sycamore 13 saw Andy Williams (Dorset Pools) pick up third thanks to 64-3-0.

Dave Hailey (OBW) put together the best weight of the week on Sunday using maggot, fished to each side of peg 4 on the Chestnut, to haul out 122-9-0, which featured carp to 8lbs. John Wild was in the reckoning again, finishing one fish short of top spot when he handed up 117-11-0 at peg 36 on the Chestnut. Third man Tim Treherne (Wolverhampton) had 89-7-0 from Chestnut 7 and an Oak best of 86-0-0 gave Simon Richardson (Maver) 4th.

Boldings report

Boldings Report 7/4/09

With some better weather and longer days, weights are beginning to climb at the commercials, and ton up catches were in evidence over the last week.

Best of these was the 119-5-0 which gave Steve Roberts (Rod & Gun) top spot in the Sunday open at Boldings. Having pulled peg 22 on the Sycamore out of the draw bag, Steve worked close in with corn and maggot to attract carp to 8lbs for his victory.

David Emlyn (Oakengates Ang Cent) fished pellet close in at Beech peg 16, and also found carp to 8 lbs to build his runner up 87-7-0. Third came from the Larch Pool, with Darren Frost (Shimano Wales) just pipping Graham Evason (OB Wolves) to the place. Darren scaled 73-1-0 at peg 15 and Graham had 72-12-0 from peg 4 on the same pool.

Harry Colley (OB Wolves) recorded an even 60-0-0 to collect the coin on the Monday Affordable open on the Oak Pool. His catch of carp to 7lbs came from point peg 29 and fell to pellet and meat, fished at 5 metres and close in. Over at peg 3, in the middle of the dam wall, Colin Reynolds (Bilston Ang Cent) fished up in the water with pellet for carp in the 1lb to 4lb bracket, finishing one fish short of the winner on 56-14-0. Kevin Melville (Dorset Pools) netted 35-13-0 at peg 8 for third, with Mel Kitson (R & G) hard on his heels on 34-4-0 at peg 21.

Karl Haywood (Sedgley Lions) knocked out a ton from the Sycamore on Wednesday for the clearest win of the week. He was on peg 33 and offered maggot up in the water, and close in to find carp to 9lbs on his way to 102-9-0.

Out on point peg 13, Stuart Aston (Swan JT) presented corn, close in, for carp to 8lbs, which added up to a level 77-0-0. John Wild (Stafford) put a Chestnut Pool best of 61-0-0 on the scales at peg 36 for third, and Tony Foster (OBW) had 56-2-0 from Sycamore 30 for 4th.

Mel Kitson had a century on Thursday to add a win to his 4th place on Monday, after drawing peg 31 on the Sycamore. Pellet and maggot, fished to each side of the peg got carp to 7lbs feeding and Mel slipped the net under a total of 101-14-0 to see off the challenge of Ian Hughes (Shimano Wales).

Ian was on the peg which produced 3rd the previous day, number 36 on the Chestnut, and found his fish, carp to 6lbs, with shallow fished maggot, to tip 89-10-0 on the scales. Close behind was Ed Turner (OBW) who was also on a peg which featured the previous day, number 13 on the Sycamore. Ed had a level 88-0-0, leaving Eric Bancroft (R&G) to pick up 4th with 69-6-0 from Chestnut 5.

The closest finish came on Saturday when less than 3lbs separated first and second. Andy Bayliss-Kyte (Maver Midlands) and Jeff Harston (Wrexham) battled it out on the Sycamore and Larch pools respectively, with Andy just edging ahead at Sycamore 30. Bream to 3lbs as well as carp to 7lbs showed up, where Andy alternated shallow maggot with pellet in the side to scale 83-9-0. Jeff fished at 14 metres with shallow maggot at Larch 16, and had carp to 7lbs for 81-2-0. Kevin Melville had another third when he pooped 62-11-0 in the net at Larch peg 1, and Sycamore 33 was in the frame again, giving Keith Powell (New Willenhall) 57-4-0 for 4th.
