Boldings Report 28/10/08.

 

          With the Severn out of order again it was off to the stillwater venues for the match angling brigade this week, where some good sport was recorded.

          The Oak and Middle pools proved best at Boldings, each providing two winners.

First up was the Oak when Ian Hughes (Shimano Wales) collected the coin on Wednesday after adopting the shallow caster approach which has stood Pete Plant in good stead over the past few weeks.

          Ian pulled Oak peg 31 from the bag on Wednesday, and found carp to 7 lbs to put 59-3-0 on the scales at the end. Over at peg 16 on the same pool, Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) put in the first of three frame appearances, taking second with a 50-15-0 net of carp to 5lbs, which tempted with pellet at 8 metres. Also on the Oak was third man Joe Brennan (OB Wolves) with 43-12-0 from peg 11. Harry Colley (OB Wolves) was top man on the Chestnut Pool, and 4^th overall when he finished close behind Brennan on 43-1-0 at peg 36.

 

          Richard Lawson (Maver)  fished corn, close in at corner peg 1 on the Middle Pool on Thursday to ease ahead of the opposition by 11lbs. he netted carp from 1lb to 4lbs to finish on 56-8-0. Paul Evans (Willis Worms) fished maggot at 6 metres at peg 3 on the Hawthorn, and included roach to a pound with carp to 5 lbs in his 45-3-0 tally.

          A Beech best of 43-6-0 saw Dave Barnard (Rod & Gun) into third, and Mick Jameson had his second placing of the week with 41-0-0 form peg 5 on the Middle.

 

          The Middle Pool came up with the winner again on Saturday, but only just. Steve Owen (Mid Leisure) had carp to 6lbs on shallow caster at peg 4 for 43-15-0 to deny Mick Jameson a win by 6 ozs. Mick was on the opposite side of the Middle at peg 10, where carp to pellet at 6 metres and close in added up to 43-9-0.

          Pete Moss (Telford) headed the Hawthorn card and took third overall with 36-6-0 at 13, with Pete Plant (Maver) finishing off the frame at hawthorn peg 9 where he recorded 30-9-0.

 

          Shallow fished caster on the Oak Pool worked again on Sunday, giving Dave Craggs the best weight of the week. He was on peg 16, and offered ‘shells’ at 12 metres to attract carp to 6lbs and roach to 1lb for final figures of 76-1-0.

          Dave Barnard framed again, and had another pool best, this time from the Sycamore. Dave offered pellet at 6 metres and in the side for carp to 7lbs and bream to 3lbs, to total 66-6-0.           Pete Plant (Maver) continued to wear a groove to the prize table at Boldings Pools with two more victories this week, and recording the best weight of the week at the complex again.

          That came on Wednesday when his shallow caster attack at peg 13 on the Hawthorn resulted in a haul of carp to 7lbs which totalled 95-7-0.

          Ian Hughes (Shimano Wales) fished corn into the corner at peg 5 on the Middle Pool to net 64-4-0 to claim second. Back on the Hawthorn, Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) had 61-90 at peg 5 for third, with Tony Foster (OB Wolves) getting 4^th thanks to 45-14-0 at hawthorn 3.

 

          Pellet down the shelf to each side of peg 31 on the Sycamore put Eric Bancroft (Rod & Gun) in charge of the Thursday open, with carp to 8 lbs and bream to 4lbs adding up to a 63-4-0 winner.

          Paul Evans (Willis Worms) fed maggot at 6 metres at peg 4 on the Chestnut, and he too caught carp and bream, with carp on 5lbs and bream to 3lbs giving him 48-14-0 for second. Mick Jameson was third again, scaling 38-13-0 this time at peg 38 on the Chestnut, and 1 lb behind him , at peg 4 on the Sycamore was Mel Kitson (R &G) on 37-13-0.

 

          Saturday saw Pete Plant back at the top of the list again, but it was a much closer run thing than the Wednesday match, and his level 58-0-0 from ‘paddles’ peg 13 on the Willows Pool gave him less than a pound and a half to spare.

          The man breathing down his neck was John Francis (R & G) who was round the corner at peg 17 on the same pool. John fished pellet at 4 metres and 10 metres to finish on 56-9-0. A Beech best of 38-0-0 gave Jason Atwell (Kingswinford) third, with Phil Rhodes (Mid Leisure) just behind him on 37-0-0 at Willows peg 9.

 

          The Oak Pool produced the winner on Sunday when Graham Roberts (OBW) drew corner peg 1 on the dam, and found carp to 8lbs with corn fished down the side. At the finish Graham had netted 72-10-0 to take a 10lbs advantage in the list over Steve Owen (Mid Leisure). Steve was on peg 16 on the Willows and had carp to 6lbs on corn for 60-7-0.

          Pete Plant (Maver Midlands) has hit a hot run of form at Boldings Pools, and followed  up his 117lb win in last weeks league match with a 155lb winner this week.

          His big weight came from the Ash Pool this time, after he drew peg 7 on Sunday. Once again it was shallow fished caster that got the fish feeding, and it took a lot of fish in 1lb to 4lb bracket to make up Pete’s 115-13-0 total.

          Gareth Emlyn (Oakengates Ang Cent) fished maggot to each side of peg 5 on the Beech Pool to pick off carp to 9lbs on his way to 93-13-0 and second place. Harry Colley (OB Wolves) continued his form with 82-14-0 for third at peg 1 on the Ash, and Dave Brown (Maver) finished things off with 74-13-0 from Beech peg 16.

 

          In the week Dave Barnard (Rod & Gun) added another win to his list with top honours on the Thursday open. It was a close run thing between dave and Paul Evans (Willis Worms) with Dave having a better stamp of carp at peg 2 on the Sycamore. His pellet bait, fished at 6 metres, attracted carp to 7lbs and bream to 3lbs for a total of 61-8-0. while over on peg 34, Paul was having carp to 5lbs, close in on maggot and caster for 60-3-0.

          It was even closer between third and fourth, with Eric Bancroft (R&G) scaling 46-13-0 at Sycamore 31, and Ted Ecclestone (Stafford) 46-0-0 at peg 13.

         

          Willows pegs filled the frame in the rain on Saturday, with only 8lbs between 1^st and 4^th. Tony Foster (OBW) was man in first, with a catch of ghosties to 3lbs, caught on pellet at 10 metres at peg 13, adding up to 49-6-0.

          Phil Rhodes (Mid Leisure) was round at peg 17, and he also caught on pellet at 10 metres, netting carp to 5lbs for 46-1-0.           The Shropshire Winter League got under way in the deluge of Sunday morning when the teams met for the first round of the 2008 series, at Boldings Pools.

          Maver Midlands, having changed sponsors from last year, and strengthened their squad after finishing as runners up, and the changes paid off with a team victory.

          They included two section wins in their team effort and ended the day on 24 points, Rod & Gun were only four points behind on 28 for second. Oakengates Angling Centre shared third with Weston Tackle, both having 42 points. Weston will be pleased with their first foray into the league, they had three section winners, which was more than any other team on the day.

Defending champions Mosella Black Country had to settle for 5^th with their 43 points. Total Angling scored 46 for 6^th and Hodnet were 7^th on 55.

          Maver team men took the top two individual places, while Rod & Gun had three men in the frame. Caster master Pete Plant picked up first for Maver with 117-4-0 of carp to 8lbs at peg 3 on the Hawthorn, taking his fish on shallow caster at 12 metres.

          Chris Hill, who moved from Mosella to Maver this year just got second when he scaled 90-4-0 at Sycamore 13, having caught on corn, fished to each side of the point. Only one ounce behind was Dave Brown (Rod & Gun) who had 90-3-0 on shallow caster at peg 15 on the Ash.

          Joe Brennan (R&G) was up by the island on the Hawthorn and had 83-13-0 for 4^th at peg 9, and on the other side of the island, at peg 5, Neil Russell (Hodnet)netted 75-6-0 for 5^th. Best on the Chestnut was Matt Stobbs (R&G) who was 6^th overall with 64-15-0 from peg 4.

          Maver and Mosella rods featured prominently in the frames at Boldings in the build up to the league match, with Andy Bayliss-Kyte starting things off with a win for the Maver camp on Wednesday. He was on peg 13 on the Hawthorn and offered pellet, up in the water for 94-2-0 of carp to 7lbs. League winner Pete Plant was on hawthorn 11 and had 82-4-0 fishing pellet to the island to take second. Matt Stockton (Mosella) was over on corner peg 1 and scaled 47-14-0 for third, and 4^th went to an Ash pool best of 38-1-0 from Frank Mountfield (Wolves).

 

          On Thursday Matt Stockton moved up to first with a pellet based mix of carp to 8lbs and bream for 93-3-0 from peg 34 on the Sycamore. A Chestnut best of 69-7-0 gave Dave Barnard (R&G) second. Dave had carp to 5lbs and bream to 2lbs on pellet at 5 metes at peg 35.

          Graham Roberts (OB Wolves) had a level 64-0-0 at Sycamore 25 for third and Paul Evans (Willis Worms) weighed 58-6-0 at Sycamore 39 for 4^th.

 

          A northerly wind saw temperatures plummet on Saturday to give the first real taste of winter, and weights fell accordingly. Nigel Ball (Mosella) picked up the main prize, and had 20lbs to spare with 59-3-0 at Sycamore peg 8. Nige caught on corn and pellet, fished close in, and included carp to 8lbs with bream to 3lbs in his net.

          Tony Foster (OBW) also fished corn and pellet to lead the way on the Chestnut, taking fish close in at peg 32 to scale 39-12-0. Colin Reynolds (Bilston Ang Cent) had 34-9-0 from Chestnut 36 for 3^rd and just over a pound behind him, on 33-7-0 was Mark Malin (Mosella) at Chestnut 4.

 

          With the league match taking up much of the fishery on Sunday, the open was staged on the Willows and Oak pools, with the oak proving surprisingly subdued, and the Willow giving the top three weights. Pete Ricketts (New Willenhall) was a clear winner with 66-8-0 from peg 8. Pete alternated fishing to the far bank, and close in, with corn and pellet to net carp to 6lbs. Runner up dave Craggs (OBW) fished up in the water at peg 17 with pellet for 44-8-0 of carp 5lbs.
