Boldings report

          Low Temperatures brought with them lower weights for the Wednesday open at Boldings, but it still took close on 50lbs to lift the winners purse. The man carrying off the main cash was Stuart Aston (Swan JT) who alternated fishing to the island at Chestnut peg 21, with a close in approach, to net carp to 7lbs for 48-5-0. Hot on Astons heels was Steve Hall (Oswestry) who caught carp from 1lb to 6lbs on pellet at 9 metres, to record 47-1-0 at Sycamore 8.

          It’s good to see Keith Griffin (Little Dawley) back on the bank, and in the frame, after some serious leg surgery. Keith was drawn on Sycamore 13, and took third with 37-4-0, with Tony Foster (OB Wolves close behind on 36-1-0 at Chestnut 7.

         

          Weights shot up on Thursday when John Francis (Rod & Gun) took the day off from long distance driving to put in some heavy haulage work at peg 15 on the Hawthorn.

          Corn and pellet at 5metres and close in saw John slipping the net under 91-12-0 of carp to 8lbs, to finish nearly 20lbs clear of fellow Rod & Gun man Mel Kitson. Mel was on the opposite bank, at Hawthorn 1, and used the same tactics as John for his 72-12-0 runner up.

          Next to the winner, Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) scaled 70-15-0 for third, and Dave Barnard (Maver Wolves) was 4^th from island peg 9 with 62-11-0.

         

          Phil Rhodes (Mid Leisure) headed a Chestnut frame on Saturday, combining corn, pellet and maggot to pick up carp to 7lbs at 6metres, and down the shelf at peg 37, to end the day on 69-13-0. Dave Brown Maver) also netted carp to 7lbs, fishing maggot at 12 metres and close in at peg 15, but was left needing one more fish when the scales settled at 64-8-0. Tony Faulkener (OB Wolves) was exactly 20lbs behind Brown on 44-8-0 at peg 32 and Roy Richardson (West End) was just over  pound behind him on 43-5-0 at peg 7.

 

          Weights were up again on Sunday and the peg next to Saturdays winner came up with the goods for Graham Evason (OB Wolves). He fished pellet at 10 metres and down the ledge at Chestnut 36 to find carp to 8lbs for a 92-8-0 top score.

          Mick Jameson became the only angler to frame more than once in the weeks proceedings when he slipped 82-14-0 onto the scales at Hawthorn peg 5. His fish, in the 1lb to 7lbs range, came to pellet at 6metres, and fished to the island.

          Carl Jones (Maver) just beat Ralph Johnson (Bilston Ang Cent) to third. Carl scaled 77-15-0 at Hawthorn 15 and Ralph 77-11-0 at peg 12 on the same pool. CASTER KING PETE RULES AT BOLDINGS.

Pete Plant (Maver) put in a stunning performance with his shallow caster approach at Boldings on Wednesday, putting together a terrific winter net of carp in the 1lb to 7lb range to annihilate the opposition on the Middle and Hawthorn pools.

Pegged on number 3 on the Middle, Pete offered his ‘shells’ in open water, and caught from start to finish, to record 140-0-0.

Over on the hawthorn, Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) worked with pellet at 4 metres and close for carp to 6lbs, but despite finishing with a very respectable weight, his 68-10-0 was a long way short of the winner. Brian Travis (Total Angling)was a very close third at corner peg 1 on the Hawthorn, scaling 67-6-0. back on the Middle, Bill Kemp must have felt ‘shell ‘shocked at the next peg to the winner, where he weighed 53-8-0 for 4^th.

John Wild (Stafford) has framed a few times in recent weeks, and made to the number one spot on Thursday after drawing number 36 on the Chestnut. Corn, fished into the side saw him picking up carp to 9lbs, which helped him to ease ahead of Ed Turner (OB Wolves) who was on the opposite bank at number 6, collecting carp to 7lbs on corn and pellet, alternated between 4 and 6 metres. At the whistle John had 75-12-0 in his net, and Ed 60-4-0. Third went to a Beech best of 54-7-0, recorded at peg 9 by Colin Reynolds (Bilston Ang Cent) and in 4^th was Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) on 43-6-0 at peg 16.

Mel Kitson stepped up to the winners mark on a frosty Saturday open, when pellet and paste had carp to 8lbs coming to the net at peg 46 on the Sycamore, for a top score of 75-15-0.

Three pegs along the same bank Tony Foster (OB Wolves) had carp to 6lbs and bream to 2lbs for a second best 56-5-0 at peg 49.

Third came from the Oak when Dave Brown (Maver) scaled 47-9-0 at peg 8, and a chestnut best of 43-6-0 gave Carl Jones (Maver) fourth.

On Sunday Mark Stevens (SPQR) fished out into open water at peg 13 on the Sycamore, presenting pellet at 13 metres for 84-10-0, made up with carp from 1lb to 8lbs.

Maggot, fished down the shelf at peg 21 on the Chestnut put 79-4-0 in the net to gain second for John Francis (Rod & Gun) second, ahead of fellow R& G man Eric Bancroft, who was the leading light on the Willows Pool with 65-15-0.

Rounding off the week in 4^th was Graham Roberts (OB Wolves) on 57-6-0 at Chestnut 36.

PLENTY OF BIG WEIGHTS STILL AT BOLDINGS.

Nothing under 50lbs was good enough to make the frame at Boldings this week despite the definite onset of Autumn. Maggot and corn came out on top as the most successful baits, and it was a combination of the two which helped Tony Faulkener (OB Wolves) to the first match topping performance of the week.

Tony was on peg 9 on the Ash Pool for the Wednesday open and alternated shallow fished maggot in open water, and corn fished into the margins to bag carp from 1lb to 8lbs for an 88-11-0 top score.

Opposite Tony, Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes) used similar tactics at peg 14, where the fish were slightly smaller and left him just short on 83-0-0. Andy Williams (Telford) framed again with a third best of 65-7-0 at Ash 16, and a Beech best of 56-5-0 gave Pete Plant 4^th.

Peg 21 on the Chestnut is showing good form and having come up with a winner last week-end, it provided Dave Brown (Maver) with the first leg of a double this week, and a ton up catch to boot. Dave dropped exactly 100lbs on the scales at the end of the Thursday open, having caught carp to 8lbs, close in on maggot and corn.

Last Thursdays winner Eric Bancroft (Rod & Gun) pushed Brown all the way, with a catch of carp to 7lbs and bream to 3lbs adding up to 95-15-0 at Chestnut 9. Tony Foster (OB Wolves) collected third, scaling 65-14-0 at peg 13 on the Chestnut, and Andy Williams was there again , taking 4^th this time on 61-14-0 at Chestnut 36. Dave Barnard (Maver Wolves) topped the Sycamore card with 61-3-0.

Saturday was the day that Dave Brown scored the second leg of his double. This was the slowest day of the week at Boldings, and Dave beat a trio of weights from the Chestnut with an Oak Pool best of 62-14-0. Fishing corn to the paddles at peg 13, he netted carp from 1lb to 7lbs on his way to victory.

Tony Foster moved up from third to second, leading the way on the Chestnut with a pellet and corn based 57-10-0 at peg 38. Just along the same bank John Francis (Rod & Gun) netted 51-14-0 for third, ahead of Wednesdays winner Tony Faulkener on 50-15-0 at peg 13.

The second ton of the week came on Sunday when the fish at peg 9 on the Beech queued up for the corn and caster offered by Pete Plant. He added a win to his mid-week 4^th when carp to 9lbs added up to 108-4-0.

Kevin Melville (Phoenix) opted for corn and pellet at Oak 13, and had a lot of fish from 1lb to 7lbs in a total of 81-8-0 to take 2^nd.

Back on the Beech Carl Jones (M aver) had 58-4-0 from corner peg 3 to just beat Phil Rhodes (Mid Leisure) on 57-3-0 on the point.

MORE MID WEEK TONS AT BOLDINGS

Both mid-week opens at Boldings Pools came up with ‘ton plus’ weights again, with the Middle and Chestnut taking over from the Hawthorn and Beech in providing the winning nets.

On Wednesday Pete Plant (Maver) used his shallow caster method to the best possible effect at corner peg 7 on the Middle to plunder a shoal of carp in the 1lb to 8lb class, for a final figure of 114-14-0. Next to Pete, last weeks double winner Andy Williams (Telford) also fished up in the water, offering maggot for 74-14-0 of carp to 7lbs, to take second.

Third came from the Hawthorn when Jason Atwell (Wolves) scaled 64-9-0 at peg 3, with Martin Travis (Shrewsbury) picking up 4^th from the same pool thanks to 50-4-0 from peg 11.

Eric Bancroft (Rod & Gun) took over the winners mantle on Thursday after pulling Chestnut 15 from the bag, and going to work with corn and maggot. Fishing on the inside, Eric picked up carp to 8lbs on his way to 103-1-0.

Around at peg 4, Tony Foster (OB Wolves) chased the winner all the way to the whistle, with carp to 7lbs and bream to 3lbs, taken on pellet and corn, adding up to 97-10-0. Andy Williams framed again, coming in third with 68-8-0 at Chestnut 7, leaving John Wild (Stafford) on 64-2-0 at Chestnut 21, to claim 4^th.

Paul Cartwright (OB Wolves) made it two Saturday wins on the trot when he led the way with an even 90-0-0 from Chestnut 6 this week. Corn and maggot at 5 metres and close in, brought carp to 8lbs to the net, keeping Paul just clear of Tony Faulkener (OB Wolves). He was peg 5 on the Ash Pool and attracted his fish, carp to 7lb, with shallow caster, finishing on 86-14-0. One fish behind Tony was Carl Jones (Sedgley) on 85-2-0 at Ash 20, then it was back to the Chestnut for 4^th placed Ralph Johnson (Bilston Ang Cent) on 74-13-0 at peg 36.

Ralph moved to the top of the card on Sunday, heading a tight frame from peg 21 on the Chestnut. Caster and maggot fished to each side of the peg brought in carp to 8lbs for Ralph to edge ahead of Thursdays winner Eric Bancroft. He fished corn and pellet into the margins at peg 32 on the Chestnut for carp to 7lbs and bream to 2lbs. When the scales settled Ralph had 77-5-0 and Eric 74-6-0.

Paul Evans (Storeys) netted a Sycamore best of 71-8-0 at peg 37, to pip Ed Turner (OB Wolves) to 3^rd overall and best on the pool. Ed scaled 70-1-0 at Sycamore 13..

AN AUTUMN ‘TON’ SAYS JACKS ALL RIGHT.

Peter Plant (Maver) and John Francis (Rod & Gun) collected the most cash at Boldings Pools this week, but the man with the top catch of the week was Jack Hailey OB Wolves).

Jack took the honours on Sunday with the only ton up catch of the week, after going to work with pellet, fished into open water, 4 metres out at peg 7 on the Chestnut. The tactic resulted in a steady stream of carp in the 1lb to 8lb range coming to the net for a winning total of 104-3-0.

Pete Ricketts (New Willenhall) repeated his second placing of last Sunday by netting an Oak pool best of 93-12-0. He was on peg 22 and offered corn close in for carp to 7lbs. John Francis was a close third, scaling 92-10-0 at peg 38, on the opposite bank of the Chestnut from the winner. A little further along that bank Kelvin Emlyn (Oakengates Ang Cent) netted 83-3-0 at peg 35 to take 4^th, ahead of his son Gareth on 73-6-0 at peg 30.

Saturday had seen John Francis at the head of an all Chestnut frame, when 58lbs of carp were backed up by 30lbs of bream to give John figures of 88-9-0 at peg 28. Pellet at 5 metres and maggot close attracted carp to 6lbs and bream to 3lbs for an overall advantage of 11lbs over Pete Plant.

Having won in the week, Pete claimed second here with a caster based 75-7-0 at peg 7. One fish behind Pete was Kevin Williams (Wolverhampton) on 73-8-0 at peg 4, and peg 30 featured again when Jamie Hughes (Birkenhead) filled fourth with 66-13-0.

Pete Plants win came on Wednesday and came courtesy of his favourite shallow fished caster approach. Drawn on peg 16 on the Ash, he offered his ‘shells’ at 12 metres to find carp to 4lbs and chub to 1lb and put together a 95-12-0 winning net.

Over at corner peg 9 on the Ash Tony Foster(OB Wolves) improved on his Wednesday finish of last week by one place, taking second this time. Tony fished corn and pellet into the corner to turn in 68-11-0, made up with carp from 1lb to 7lbs.

Bill Kemp (OB Wolves) was best on the Beech Pool, but was 21lbs behind second with 47-12-0 from the point. Fourth also came from the Beech when Brian Clarke (BCUK), back from International duty with the Scotland team at the World Championships in Hungary, posted 45-14-0 at peg 5.

Three different pools filled the frame on Thursday, and Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) got back to winning ways, running out a comfortable victory with 88-13-0 at peg 29 on the Oak. Pellet and paste at 5 metres did the trick for Mel, with lots of fish in the 1lb to lb bracket making up his catch.

Peg 20 on the Beech proved profitable for Graham Evason (OB Wolves) who fished pellet at 5 metres for 67-13-0 and second place. Not far behind him, with a Hawthorn best of 63-12-0 was Paul Ferguson (OB Wolves) and in fourth was last weeks double winner Andy Williams (Telford) on 61-12-0 at Oak 26.
