Boldings report

SPORTS DESK 22/5/07

Two of the four matches at Boldings Pools produced ton up catches for the first three in the frames, and a top catch for the week of 135-15-0.

That came on the Saturday open when Ralph Johnson (Bilston Angling) was the only competitor to top the magic figure, with a haul of carp to 8lbs and bream to 3lbs. Ralph was on peg 11 on the Larch Pool, and fished caster close in at the corner peg to leave the rest trailing by a long way.

Dave Brown (Maver Tipton) was closest to the winner, and he was 50lbs adrift on 85-0-0 at Chestnut peg 7. Dave also caught carp and bream, close in, but operated with maggot rather than caster. Best on the Sycamore Pool was Phil Rhodes Middy ML) who netted 69-10-0 at point peg 13, and fourth also came from the Sycamore when Kevin Melville (Phoenix) slid 65-11-0 onto the scales at peg 25.

Sunday saw the biggest turn-out again, and Duncan Newton (WB Clarke) followed in the footsteps of brother John, who won last Sunday, by picking up the lions share of the Sunday pay-out this week. The Chestnut Pool provided John with his moment of glory last week, in the pouring rain, Duncan’s triumph came on the Sycamore on a warm and sunny day. Pegged on 46, with his back to the Willows Pool, he worked at 5 metres, and close in with maggot, and was helped to 133-11-0 by carp to 14lbs and bream to 3lbs.

Steve Pearce (SBS) used the same tactics at peg 24 to find carp to 10lbs and tench to 3lbs, which eased him into second place with a total of 113-7-0.

Willows peg 3 came up with a ton for Dave Matson (Maver Wolves) who claimed third with 104-4-0, and Dave Brown framed again, by netting 95-7-0 at Willows 19.

The week began with a win for David James (Mosella) on Wednesday, when the back pools were used and Dave drew peg 13 on the Hawthorn, where pellet bait, alternated between the five metre line and close in, brought carp to 8lbs to the net for a 95-9-0 winner.

Over at peg 1 on the same pool, Tony Foster (OB Wolves) presented pellet and corn close to the paddles for 84-8-0, which gave him second. Third came from the Middle Pool when Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes) scaled 67-0-0 at peg 5, then it was back to the Hawthorn and back to the Foster family, with Carl Foster a close 4th on 66-1-0 at peg 3.

Brian Clarke (BCUK) missed the hundred pound mark by four ounces on Thursday last week when he won with 99-12-0. There was no missing the target this week as Brian headed a trio of tons with 130-5-0. He was on peg 4 on the Sycamore and found carp to 9lbs and bream to 3lbs with maggot and corn.

Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) led the way on the Chestnut, and took second overall with 112-13-0 on corn and pellet at peg 30, and Jason Elwell (MB Angling) made it three tons by scaling 102-6-0 at Sycamore 46. Alan Weston (OB Wolves) completed the frame from peg 13 on the Sycamore, with 67-7-0.

TOP FOUR ALL ‘TON IT’ IN THE RAIN AT BOLDINGS.

Sundays all day downpour failed to put a damper on the sport at Boldings, and it took 113lbs to make fourth place.

The match was won by John Newton (WB Clarke) from peg 28 on the Chestnut, where he fished maggot to the island, alternated with corn and pellet close in. The tactics brought a succession of carp to 9lbs, which helped to build a final tally of 126-14-0.

John needed every fish he netted as Paul Evans (Storeys) was hard on his heels at peg 8 on the Sycamore. He had carp to 8lbs and tench to 4lbs, fishing to each side of the point with caster, and ended the day on 122-6-0. Ash peg 9 came up with 115-9-0 for Eric Bancroft (Rod & Gun) to put into 3rd place, and Jason Elwell (MB Angling) completed the ton up top four with 113-10-0 at Sycamore 13.

The week started at Boldings in great style for Martin Travis (Dorset AC) when he recorded his first match winning ‘ton’. It was a big ton into the bargain, as Martin tipped a mighty 161-5-0 of carp to 6lbs and rudd to 1lb onto the scales at peg 3 on the Middle Pool.

Pete Plant (Maver Tipton) also made a big catch for second place. He was on peg 15 on the Hawthorn Pool and, like the winner, he fished corn close, finishing with 133-1-0.

Two pegs further along the same bank of the Hawthorn, Mel Kitson (R&G) netted 87-10-0 for third and opposite him Pete Ricketts (New Willenhall) had 76-6-0 for 4th.

On Thursday Brian Clarke (BCUK) was just four ounces short of the hundred pound mark when he won with 99-12-0 at Ash peg 9. Brian offered maggot and corn down the edge, and had a lot of fish, all in the 1lb to 5lb bracket.

Three OB Wolves rods followed Brian in the frame, with Jack Hailey leading three close weights. He was opposite the winner on Ash peg 16, and had 76-3-0 on corn and pellet. Harry Colley was top man on the Oak with 73-2-0 for third and Ed Turner led the way on the Beech with 71-0-0,

Dave Brown (Maver Tipton) picked up the winners purse on Saturday when the Sycamore pool provided the top four catches. A mix of carp and bream fell to Dave’s maggot offerings at Peg 24, with carp to 9lbs and bream to 3 adding up to a handsome 138-8-0.

Andy Williams ((Dorset AC) included tench to 3lbs with carp to 8 in his 109-2-0 at corner peg 4, and caught on corn and pellet. Out on the point at peg 13, Alan Naylor (Telford) dropped 64-11-0 in the net for third, and had Phil Rhodes (Middy ML) just behind him on 60-4-0 at peg 18.

18 pounds behind the winner was Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) who fished corn down the edge at Sycamore 36 for 78-8-0 of carp and tench. Three different pools each produced a ‘ton’ on Thursday to give the top three frame weights, and Alf Taylor moved to the top of the list. He was on Ash peg 14 and offered pellet close in for carp to 8 lbs and bream to 3lbs, which added up to a final tally of 113-2-0. Over on the Chestnut David James (Storeys) also presented pellet, alternating between fishing to the island and into the sides at peg 21 to put together 109-11-0.

Colin Reynolds (Bilston Angling) led the way on the Oak, taking 106-13-0 from peg 16 to finish third overall, ahead of Dave Barnard (Maver Wolves) on 97-3-0 at Ash 7.

Runner up Jamie Langford (OB Wolves) tempted the fish at point peg 8 on the Sycamore with corn and caster, taking carp and bream from each side of the point for 93-6-0. Only 4lbs behind Jamie was Dave Brown (Maver Tipton) with a Chestnut best of 89-2-0, leaving Tony Faulkener (OB Wolves) on 85-15-0 to complete the top four from Sycamore 4.

The Rod & Gun based Williams boys stole the show on Sunday, filling first and second places, each with 100lbs plus. Mick picked up the winners purse thanks to 117-14-0, made up with carp to 11lbs and bream to 4lbs, all on maggot, fished into the side at Sycamore 24. Andy also fished maggot close in at peg 27 on the same pool, to net carp and tench for 106-15-0.

Gareth Emlyn (Oakengates Ang Cent) beat the rest on the Chestnut to take third overall with 96-1-0, which put him just in front of a tie for 4th between Pete Plant (Maver Tipton) and Richard Lawson (Rod & Gun) each with 94-8-0.
