FRAME AVERAGE ON THE UP AT BOLDINGS.

The average weight for a top four place at Boldings this week went up by 20lbs to an impressive seventy three and a half pounds per rod, and even in the bitterly cold conditions of Sunday, the match was won with over 87lbs.

Top catch of the week was another ‘ton’ for Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) who caught plenty of carp in the 1lb to 3lb bracket, plus a few in the 4lb to 6lb range, as the day warmed up after a frosty start. Drawn in the corner at peg 1 on the Ash Pool, Mel took all his fish close in on corn and pellet, to put 110-3-0 on the scales.

Up in the other corner of the same bank of the Ash, peg 9, Bob Tromans )Fiery Holes) worked pellet to each side of the peg for another big bag of small carp, 90-14-0, which gave him second. Opposite him at peg 14 Tony Foster (OB Wolves) netted 75-2-0 for third, and Pete Plant filled fourth with a Stock Pool top score of 69-12-0.

Thursday saw a closer finish when Graham Evason (OB Wolves) finished just under 2lbs ahead of Colin Reynolds (Bilston Angling).

They were on different pools, with Graham being staked on the Chestnut (peg 30) and Colin the Beech (point peg 7). Both worked with pellet, Graham taking carp to 8lbs, alternating between 6 metres and ten, to end the day on 75-11-0. Colin switched between 8 metres and close in, with carp to 7lbs making up his 73-12-0.

Third went to Dave Brown (Maver Tipton) at Beech peg 28, where he scaled 68-10-0, and Mel Kitson framed again with 67-8-0 for 4th at Chestnut peg 36.

Richard Duke (WB Clarke) tucked another win under his belt on Saturday, taking the honours with a level 85-0-0 haul from Ash peg 7. Pellet on a shallow rig and down the side kept carp from 1lb to 4lbs coming, to give Richard an advantage of 18lbs over Richard Lawson. He was just along the bank, in the corner at peg 9, and had bigger fish, with samples to 7lbs, but not consistently enough to trouble the winner, finishing on 67-7-0.

Peg 30 was best on the Chestnut again, giving Mick Williams (Rod & Gun) 66-6-0 for third, with Nige Clarke (RAF Trabuco) not far behind on 63-13-0 at Ash 1.

With the wind having swung around to the North on Sunday, competitors had snow showers to deal with, but they didn’t bother Dave Brown much, as he moved up from third on Thursday to top spot on this one. He opted for shallow fished maggot at point peg 7 on the Beech, a move which paid off to the tune of 87-7-0, which included carp to 7lbs.

Just round the point from the winner, John Francis (Rod & Gun) maintained his impressive run of form with 76-7-0 on the pellet for second.

Another point peg, number 8 on the Sycamore, produced third for Karl Hayward (Sedgeley), but only just, as Andy Williams (Rod & Gun) was only one ounce behind at Beech 16. Karl weighed 46-1-0 and Andy 46-0-0.

Boldings report

SPORTS DESK 6/3/07

John Francis (Rod & Gun) had another good week-end at Boldings Pools with a first and a third to his credit, after Pete Plant got back to winning ways by starting off the week with the top weight to take the honours on the Wednesday open.

Pete’s decision to abandon his favourite bait, the caster, in favour of maggot, paid of well, with a 53-4-0 top score. He was on peg 5 on the Deepdale, and tempted carp to 6lbs on a shallow rig. Down at the end of the Deepdale, Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes) fished to each side of peg 1 with pellet and corn to finish one decent fish behind the winner, scaling 49-8-0. Round to his right, Stuart Aston (Swan JT) netted 43-1-0 at peg 12 for third, and fourth went to a Hawthorn best of 40-6-0 form Andy Williams (Rod & Gun).

The biggest winning margin at Boldings was recorded by Ed Turner (OB Wolves) on Thursday. He was 16lbs clear of runner up Karl Haywood (Sedgeley) with 47-6-0 on corn and pellet at Beech peg 20. Karl was on the point on the same pool, and had 31-2-0 on the pellet at 12 metres. An Oak Pool best of 28-5-0 form corner peg 31 gave Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) third, and Mick Jameson (Middy ML) was 4th with 25-0-0 from Oak peg 8.

On Saturday John Francis finished 8lbs clear of a string of close weights for the remaining frame places, which included a tie for 4th.

‘Franner’ drew peg 13 on the Chestnut, and proved the old superstition false again with 46-10-0 of carp to 6lbs on pellet at 7 metres. Opposite him, on the point at peg 32, Martin Churchill (Wrexham) fished maggot, up in the water for 38-12-0, to beat an Oak best of 36-0-0 from Paul Cartwright. Bob Tromans framed again, sharing 4th with Ian Winter (Wolves). They each had an even 34lbs, Bob from Chestnut 36 and Ian from Oak 13.

Competitors had to endure strong winds and an all day downpour on Sunday, but the match gave the closest finish of the week when Richard Duke (WB Clarke) grabbed the spoils from Colin Reynolds (Bilston Angling). Rich was on peg 1 on the Deepdale, and included some decent rudd with his carp for a total of 47-14-0. Colin drew peg 5 on the hawthorn and fished to the island and close in, but fell agonizingly short of winning when he saw the scales settle at 46-3-0.

John Francis and Steve Laurence (OB Wolves) had an even closer tussle for third, They were both on the Oak, with john scaling 39-3-0 at peg 16 and Steve 38-10-0 at peg 2.

Best on the Middle Pool was Dave Hailey (WAC) on 36-10-0.
