Temperatures stayed below freezing al day for the mid-week matches at Boldings, and the catch rates reflected the fact, although Stuart Aston (Swan JT) did manage to top 30lbs to win on Wednesday, despite the cold.

Fishing out at 7 metres with corn, Stuart contacted carp to 4lbs in the cold at peg 3 on the Hawthorn Pool, to put a gap of 9lbs between him and runner up Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure). Mick was just along the bank at corner peg 1, and caught from the paddles, but his 21-7-0 was no match for Stuarts 30-10-0.

Down on the Middle Pool Mick Williams (Rod & Gun) took the pool honours and shared third overall with Dave Barnard (Rod & Gun). They both scaled 19-90-0, Mick from peg 10 on the Middle and Dave from peg 5 on the Hawthorn.

Thursday saw the Beech Pool in use, where the better carp were having none of it, and carp in the 1lb to 3lb bracket made up the catches.

John Wild (Stafford) tempted the most, fishing pellet at 7 metres at peg 9 to net 25-2-0. Dave Barnard moved up from 4^th on Wednesday to 2^nd this time. He also worked the 7 metre line with pellet, taking 20-13-0 on the tactic at peg 29, to finish ahead of Colin Reynolds (Bilston Ang Cent) on 17-10-0 at point peg 7.

Beech 16 proved to be a winning draw for Andy Bayliss- Kyte (Rod & Gun) on Saturday, but it was a close run thing as Pete Plant (Maver) finished exactly 2lbs behind him, needing just one more fish to nick first place.

Andy offered pellet at 13 metres and found carp in the 1lb to 5lb range, slightly bigger than those which accepted Pete’s maggot bait, fished at 12 metres at Ash peg 5. When the five hours was up, Andy had 33-8-0 in his net and Pete had 31-8-0.

Dave Brown (Maver) was a further 8lbs behind on 23-3-0 at Beech 25, and Thursdays winner John Wild helped himself to 4^th with 19-11-0 at Ash 9.

Pete Plant drew Ash 5 again the following day, and tackled it with maggot again, but went out a little further to fish at 14 metres. The fish ran a bit smaller than those he caught on Saturday, but there were a lot more of them and Pete recorded the top weight of the week at 55-12-0 to win by over 20lbs.

At corner peg 11 on the Middle Pool Steve Lawrence (OB Wolves) dropped his pellet bait close to the paddles to find carp to 5lbs for his runner up 34-6-0. That saw Colin Reynolds (Bilston Ang Cent) squeezed out for the second time in two weeks, as he finished less a pound adrift on 33-9-0 at Beech 9. Dave Brown framed again, dropping one place to 4^th with 31-8-0 and Sean Barber (Telford) was close behind him with a Hawthorn best of 29-13-0.

Weights held up well through the frosts at Boldings Pools, where the weeks matches started with a 50lb winner for Bob Tromans (Fiery Holes). Bob got back to winning ways on Wednesday after drawing peg 21 on the Chestnut Pool, which he tackled with pellet at 7metres, and found carp to 6lbs on his way to 50-3-0.

For the second Wednesday running Andy Williams (Telford) was left needing one more fish at peg 8 on the Sycamore, when his mix of carp to 5lbs and bream to 3lbs added up to 47-5-0.

Back on the Chestnut, Tony Foster (OB Wolves) netted 31-6-0 at peg 30 to finish third, leaving Pete Moss (Telford) on 28-6-0 at Sycamore 48 to pick up fourth.

Thursday saw the Beech and Ash pools in use, with the Beech providing Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) with a narrow winning margin over Mark Stevens (Wolves).

Mick fished pellet at 5 metres at 5 on the Beech to tempt carp in the 1lb to 5lb range, while Mark had to work a bit harder at peg 20 on the Ash, catching carp from 1lb to 4lbs at 12 metres, also on pellet. The slightly bigger fish in Mick’s net made the difference, giving him a 33-7-0 total while Mark saw the scales settle at 31-10-0.

Third placed Pete Ricketts (New Willenhall) was opposite the point on the Beech, on peg 23, where he scaled 28-4-0 to hold off Colin Reynolds (Bilston Ang Cent) on 26-4-0 at Beech 29.

Saturday saw a big turn-out and a peg to peg battle for top spot between Wayne Mellings (Maver) and Paul Cartwright (OB Wolves). Wayne chose to fish maggot under a 16 metre pole, at peg 15 on the Chestnut, while Paul went for pellet at 10 metres, next door at peg 17.

There was little to choose between them right up to the finish, with Paul netting a bit better stamp of carp, with fish to 7lbs, but Wayne, who had fish to 5lbs, netting one or two more. When the scales came, Wayne had the edge with 47-6-0 to Paul’s 44-8-0. Paul had Richard Lawson (Rod & Gun) hot on his heels with a Beech Pool best of 43-6-0 at peg 20.

Fourth also came from the Beech when Andy Williams became the only angler to frame twice this week, thanks to 31-13-0 from peg 16.

Best on the Ash was Dave Barnard (Rod & Gun) on 31-8-0 in fifth.

The temperature was down at minus two on Sunday, but that didn’t stop Tony Faulkener (OB Wolves) recording the top weight of the week, leading an all OB Wolves frame with 64-12-0. Tony fished pellet and corn to the island, and out into open water at 10 metres at peg 28 on the Chestnut, to contact carp to 8lbs.

Graham Roberts was round at peg 36 on the Chestnut and caught carp to 6lbs on corn at 14 metres to finish second on 39-14-0. Third placed Dave Hailey led the way on the Beech with 34-12-0 to finish third ahead of Steve Lawrence on 30-2-0 at peg 21 on the Chestnut.

My apologies for the missing results from last week, I was away from home and had some difficulty with communications failures.

There was no river action this week with the Severn spilling over into the fields above and below Shrewsbury. Hopefully the frosty weather at the start of this week will get the levels down, and sport will benefit from the flushing.

There was plenty of stillwater action though, and at Boldings Pools Pete Plant (Maver) added another win to the one he enjoyed last week and there was more success for fellow Maver rod Dave Brown, but it Morgans Oswestry backed Arthur Wood who made the top catch of the week. After drawing peg 11 on the Middle Pool on Thursday, Arthur took a leaf out of the Pete Plant book of baits and offered caster, up in the water to bring carp to 6lbs into the swim, and netted enough of them to establish a 10lbs advantage over the rest with a 46-10-0 winning total.

Up the hill from the Middle, Dave Barnard (Rod & Gun) worked with pellet at peg 3 on the Hawthorn Pool, netting carp to 5lbs on the 8metre line, and close in to finish second on 36-3-0. Back on the Middle, Brian Clarke (Maver) finished a close third with 34-7-0 and next to him on the bank and in the frame was Colin Reynolds (Bilston Angling) on 26-0-0,

Pete Plant started his week with a win, filling top spot on the Wednesday open with a caster based 36-12-0 from corner peg 3 on the Beech Pool. One fish behind Pete, at point peg 7, was Andy Williams (Telford) with an even 34-0-0 for second. Round to his right Graham Roberts (OB Wolves) scaled 28-13-0 for third at peg 5 and Dave Barnard made the frame again, taking 4^th this time courtesy of 22-3-0 from |Beech 18.

Saturday saw a tight finish, with only ounces between Dave Brown and Jack Hailey (OB Wolves). Having been beaten to top spot on the Ash Pool by feeder tactics last week, Dave adopted the method to offer maggot at corner peg 9, and found 31-15-0 of carp to 5lbs on a hard day, of lashing rain and gales. Over on the Hawthorn Jack presented pellet at 10 metres, and he too netted carp to 5lbs, but saw the scales settle at an agonizing 2 ounces short of the winner at 31-13-0, which left peg 3 in runner up position for the second match running.

Third went to a Beech Pool best of 25-15-0 from Andy Bayliss-Kyte at peg 5 and peg 5 on the Hawthorn gave Joe Brennan (OB Wolves) 23-7-0 for 4^th.

          With hard frosts in the week and snow at the week-end, weights reflected the wintry weather at Boldings Pools, where the top catch was below 50 lbs for the first time.

          Graham Roberts (OB Wolves) was the man with the top catch, and it came on the Wednesday open, when he drew peg 8 on the Middle Pool , and offered pellet and maggot in the side for carp from 1lb to 6 lbs, finishing with 46-11-0.

          On the other side of the Middle Alf Taylor (OB Wolves) alternated with close in and five metres lines using pellet to finish a close second on 43-8-0 at peg 3. Up on the Stock Pool Tony Foster made it a trio of OB Wolves rods at the top of the frame with 37-14-0 at peg 10, and a Hawthorn Pool best of 36-3-0 saw Stuart Aston (Swan JT) pick up 4^th.

          Four different pools filled the top four places on Saturday with the caster master, Pete Plant (Maver) grabbing the winners purse with a Hawthorn best of 37-4-0. Feeding caster and maggot at 5 metres and close in, Pete picked up carp to 5lbs on his way to victory at peg 13.

          Runner up Ted Ecclestone (Stafford) fished the pole at 12 metres oat peg 14 on the Ash for a level 35-0-0, made up with carp from 1 to 4lbs. Sean Barber (Oakengates Ang Cent) was best on the Deepdale with 31-11-0 for third and Steve Roberts topped the Middle card with 28-4-0 in 4^th.

 

          On Sunday the top four were all on the Ash, with peg 7 on the far bank providing the winner for Colin Reynolds (Bilston Ang Cent). Colin fished into open water at 8 metres and down the side, using pellet and maggot to attract carp to 6lbs on his way to 44-5-0. Second placed Godfrey Wood Morgans Angling) was on corner peg 9 and fished corn and pellet into the corner and at 6 metres for 34-7-0.

Maver backed Dave Brown dominated the weeks proceedings at Boldings Pools, winning three of the four opens staged at the complex, and recording the top two weights.

He opened up with the best catch of the week to take the Wednesday laurels with 95-4-0, which was close on double the weight of the runner up. and nearly four times as much as anyone else on the Chestnut Pool. Dave drew point peg 32 on the Chestnut, which he plundered with a corn and maggot attack, taking carp to 5lbs at 6 metres throughout.

Joe Brennan (Rod & Gun) did his best to hang on to Browns pace, and was easily the best man on the Sycamore, but his 51-12-0 was along way short of the mark.

Back on the Chestnut, third placed Andy Williams (Telford) could catch only one fish for every four that the winner netted, and ended the day on 25-6-0 at peg 4, with Mel Kitson (Rod & Gun) close behind on 23-4-0 at the opposite side of the pool, peg 37.

On Thursday the back pools were used and the Middle provided the best two catches, and it was peg 3 which helped graham Evason (OB Wolves) to head the card. Graham combined corn and pellet at 8 metres to tempt carp to 4lbs, which added up to an even 64lbs at the finish.

Next to the winner, John Wild (Team Cudmore) fished into the corner at peg 1 for 50-15-0 to finish second. Joe Brennan recorded another pool best, taking third at peg 13 on the Hawthorn with 44-3-0, just getting the better of Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) on 43-11-0 at the next peg.

Dave Brown was back on the winners rostrum on Saturday, but for the first two hours it didn’t look as though he would make the frame. A busy final three hours at peg 9 on the Beech Pool saw Brown overhaul Wednesdays winner though, after the fish moved onto his corn and maggot feed, which he offered close in. When the whistle sounded, Dave had dropped 78-2-0 into his net, while Graham Evason saw the scales settle at 49-7-0 at peg 16 on the Ash Pool.

Back to back with the winner on the Beech, Andy Bayliss- Kyte (Rod & Gun) finished only 6 ounces behind second on 49-1-0 at Beech 5, and Ken Humphries (Morgans Angling) was a close 4^th, having overcome a 22-15-0 common carp on his way to 46-11-0 at beech 16.

Three different pools gave the top three catches on Sunday when Dave Brown completed his hat trick of wins. This was the closest encounter of the week, with one fish making the difference. Pellet and maggot did the trick again for the Maver star, offered at 4 metres this time at peg 37 on the Chestnut, and bringing in carp to 4lbs for a 47-15-0 total.

Mick Jameson put in his second frame appearance, recording an Oak Pool best of 44-1-0 at peg 29. Third went to a Beech Pool best of 36-12-0 at peg 16 by Pete Rickets (New Willenhall) and 4^th also came from the Beech when Pete Tolley (OB Wolves) scaled 36-2-0 at peg 3.

            Graham Evason (OB Wolves) opened the weeks proceedings at Boldings Pools with a win on the Sycamore Pool. Fishing pellet at 12 metres at peg 25, Graham contacted carp in the 1lb to 7lb range to put together 64-13-0. That was too good for Wane Mellings (Maver) who offered pellet shallow in open water, and close in at peg 32 on the Chestnut for 52-1-0. Pete Plant (Maver) was on peg 46 on the Sycamore, and netted 39-10-0 for third, with Graham Roberts (OB Wolves) on 36-4-0 at Chestnut 27 claiming 4^th.

           

            Brian and Martyn Travis (Sensas TA) put in some successful practice ahead of the Winter League to take first and second places on the Thursday open. Martyn just sneaked first with a Willows Pool best of 51-14-0, which consisted of carp from 1lb to 5lbs, caught on pellet at 13 metres at peg 13.

            Brian was on Stock Pool peg 7, where shallow fished maggot helped him to 51-8-0, which put him 8ounces ahead of Mick Jameson (Mid Leisure) with a Hawthorn best of 51-0-0. Michael Harris (Sensas TA) had a Deepdale best of 35-6-0 in 4^th.

 

            Gareth Emlyn (Oakengates Ang Cent) recorded the top open weight of the week by netting 67-13-0 at peg 37 on the Chestnut on Saturday, finishing clear of Brian Clarke (BCUK) on 53-3-0 at Sycamore 13. Dave Brown (Maver) was exactly 3lbs off third with 50-3-0 at Chestnut 15, and Paul Pritchard (Shrewsbury) completed the frame with 39-10-0 from Chestnut 4.

 

            On a busy Sunday at Boldings Ben Stanford (Wolves) recorded his first win, taking top spot in the open while the Winter League was in progress. Ben drew peg 32, in the corner on the Oak Pool, and worked pellet at 6metres, alternated with maggot in the side, to tempt 47-3-0, made up with carp to 7lbs.

            Similar tactics worked for Colin Reynolds (Bilston Angling) at peg 15 on the Beech, where his fish ran slightly bigger, but less of them added up to 44-8-0.
